Want to change the colour of your car? Cover it in vinyl

I saw some of the cars at the Gumball with vinyl, and they looked pretty good.

Although, I think they look best when doing something more "custom" than the one in the link. That said, the TT I've seen in white does look good, not many cars can pull white off.

i always through it would be cool if you could cover a car in the protective layer you get on CDs. now that would look good, not sure how road legal it would be though!

interesting concept. actually looks tip top.
I suppose it would cost a fair bit, but then a REAL respray is a fortune.

even if it lasts 2-3 years, then time fro a change, or sell the car etc. works for everyone :)

and not so specialist as needing a baking oven etc to complete the work, colour matching etc.

edit:
i can see it in the trader now, 12months T&T, new vinyl only covered 1k miles.

Car "wrapping" has been around for a while now :)

Most race cars (talking clio cup etc cars) would be wrapped most likely. It's a lot cheaper than paint jobs :) (Still not "cheap" thugh :p)

Chap on here posted about vinyl stuff years ago, was quite cool :)

Was some BMW done up to look like a touring car or something.

Wasn't CSLMan looking at getting his done?

I was looking into this a while back as an option for doing something wacky with vix's smart but everywhere that does it seems to sell it as a form of advertising and prices it accordingly. Couldn't find anywhere that targetted the 'normal motorist' looking for a cool paint job.

Vinyl will dull after a while, not that it's shiny to begin with unless it's metallic. Then there's shrinkage (happens to us all at a certain age). In order to fit the curvy bits it has to be heated.
For a half decent respray, how much would that be? Certainly no more expensive than that £1500 methinks. And after you get fed up of that colour, you have another respray. So economics don't work out for me. It's a fad and fads tend to come and go.
