Basically I would like a job like the people have at OCUK building systems for customers and repairing systems, or even the maintenace of computer at say a firm would be ok.

I would like to know what is the average starting salary for these type of jobs and what qualifications do I need to get into them?

As above really, for system building and maintenance, probably around £12-£14k, however for a long term career, I would then look at branching off in to a more specialised sector as you are quite limited on the amount of money you can earn unfortunately with regards to system building and repairs.

Why not use it as a stepping stone in to the industry, then look it to a more skilled area of IT? get yourself in to something like development, or even networking, then, do some work on the side in your spare time maybe fixing PC's in your local area? I do this, I currently work for an internet services company as a Network and VoIP engineer, in my spare time in the evenings and weekends, sometimes I fix PC's when they are needed around my area and earn an extra £25/hour doing it.

I was looking for the same sort of work part time but there doesn't seem to be any company's looking for staff. Where are you based?

So is kitchen porter but it's a stepping stone into the field and gives you relevant experience and ultimately, cash.

If it were me, and I were looking at a stepping stone job, id be looking more at the first line support role rather than a system builder. Thats just my opinion though.

If you're 16 and don't have relevant qualifications, this is a lot easier than trying to get a 1st line job. But 1st line is better career wise.

That's dissapointing to hear since I though building computers is a job more for a expert since not everyone can build a computer especially not to a high degree required to sell to customers.

I have a BTEC National Diploma in Electronics where I scored highest marks in Computer Maintaince and Business modules does that help me get a better starting job in this type of industy with a better salary? £16k-£18k I hope £12k-£14k i sway too low.

It's basically sticking a few cards in slots and tightening a few screws. What's 'expert' about that?

Anyone who can search on google and spend a little time reading can easily finish a system build. Its just most people choose not to as they are technophobic.

Once you have done your first build, its easy.

Well for one the pretty expensive componets and you would be surprised how many people know absolutly nothing about the computer's inside.
