I've always wanted a little motocross/trails/offroad bike to mess about on, fix up, explore with, etc.

I'd be after something that's running well, but cheap to fix and repair.

Any recommendations of what I should look out for? Need to be cheap to insure. I guess I'd get a day time MOT or something if I went ahead? Also cheap on parts, can take abuse, etc. Also what max mileage should I be looking at?

What is your budget? Will you be doing a lot of green laning or going to venues by road or will it be trailered to wherever it will be ridden?

A good workhorse for green laning and geting around on the roads is the Suzuki DR400E/S. Cheap to buy, mega cheap to insure, easy to work on, cheap parts and absolutely bullet proof.

Not sure really, I'm not sure what off roading costs or how much I'd need to spend to get something decent. I guess max 1k for the bike is what I'd consider (and only then if it's in good running condition), if not less.

It'll be ridden everywhere, mostly to green lanes, so needs to be road worthy with a day time MOT or something.

KTM EXC 400, only option in my eyes.

motocross bikes dont have mileage, they go by hours, as they are pure race bikes, they are designed to have engine rebuilds often. (only if your riding it really hard and racing)

if you want easy to repair then 2 stroke is the way to go, and if your going on the road with it, deffo something like a kx250,cr250,rm250,yz250.
they are the for jap 250 2T bikes

personally i would get a 4T like a KX450F or something, keep it maintained and it will be fine :)

saying that, husqvarna and KTM do supermoto versions if you want to go that route

Thanks, will check your suggestions out :)

What sort of money do I need to spend to get something half decent? I'm open at the moment as I'm looking into how much it's going to cost me and if it's realistic to get in to :)

Hmm, I would like the ease of a 2-stroke in terms of rebuilding and learning about the engine, but then I really love the look of the DRZ400E. Looks like it's about £2k for something really decent (2001 model). No harm in learning how to rebuild a 4-stroke!

Could I go cheaper than 2k for the DRZ400E or am I asking for trouble if I do?

Thanks

Maybe instead of motocross, buy an enduro? They'll be cheaper overall, as someone said above motocross are mainly for the tracks.

more expensive i belive, look at yamaha WR250/450F's for example

yamaha starts 4-stroke MX bikes before the other jap brands, they did a WR and YZ400F also a WR/YZ 426F

I'm open to enduro, will check some out, thanks :)

It's basically an off-road type bike I'm after whether it's enduro or motocross or something else. Completely open to suggestions.
