Hi Guys

I'm not 100% clued up on networking, but here it goes...

I currently have the master BT socket in the hallway, with a 'DIY' cheap extension cable plugged into the front, going upstairs into the bedroom into a phone socket (just chopped the pre-crimped socket, and terminated in the wall). The connection is filtered there for a phone, and the router.

What I want to do, is replace this cable with a better quality cable to improve connection speeds (and ultimately reduce line noise) as I am sure this is interfering with connectivity as I plugged the router directly into the master socket and it connected instantly - unfortunately, due to just having the bedroom done, moving all the CAT5 cable is not an option.

Can I use CAT5/CAT6 ethernet cable out of the back of the master phone socket (its an NTE5 socket) into the socket upstairs.

I will ultimately be replacing the router as well.

On a side note, I replaced my dads router at the weekend and his internet speed increased from 1.4Mb, to 2.4Mb. I then changed the DSL filter and it increased to 4.4Mb. These figures were obtained from the router status panel. It was a Netgear DG834G.

Does a DSL filter make that much difference? If so, can you recommend me one.

Would you recommend the Netgear DG834G router for me, or is there anything better?

Thanks
