Using this desktop currently (with 8GB ram instead of the default 3 on a 64 bit machine) and have an Intel E4500 @2.2GHZ atm

on the link above

Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades: - IPIBL-LB (Benicia) motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad (Y) Q9xxxx
Intel Core 2 Duo (W) E8xxx
Intel Core 2 Quad (K) up to Q6600
Core 2 Duo E6x00 (C) up to E6700
Core 2 Duo E4x00 (C) up to E4400

I'm curious what CPU I should upgrade to, to improve my rendering performance atm it takes 2-3 hours or so for a 16-20 minute video at 1280x720 to render (video game gameplay rendering)

I was hoping a CPU I can upgrade to can possibly get it down to under an hour ? need your help guys.

You should have a read here: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/aftereffects/cs/using/WS9F936D13-E76A-41e4-BF8F-577132AB4723a.html

in particular the multi-processing settings. Do you care about cost? I'd go with whichever quad core with the highest frequency you can get/prepared to pay for. Assuming both cores of your C2D are lit up at all times when rendering.

I'll probably get one 2nd hand seen a few Q6600's go around £60 and under and Q9450-Q9550 go £80-100

just curious if it would get my rendering times to around an hour.

I've found that this site: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php is reasonably good at getting close to understanding speed multiples. Your E4500 comes in at 1270. A Q9550 at 4200. Expect a 3-4x performance improvement assuming CPU bound.

Thanks for that link  I'll see what the times are like for the best cpu I can get on my current desktop if they're respectable I'll just get one. If a new cpu is that much of an improvement then a whole new desktop will be needed.

You may be right. Looking at your specs, all you need is:
Mobo-Z68
Cpu -i3 or i5
Ram -8-16GB`s
SSD-60-68GB`s for OS and software, use your 500gb hdd for storage.
Psu
and probably a new Gpu.

Might pay you to open a spec me thread. State your budget and what it will be used for, ie rendering, gaming, etc, and see what you can get.
You already have some suggestions to give you some idea.

Will do so, if and when I have the budget thanks for the suggestions something I'll mull over for next month.
