Want to leave retail - what options are there?

I have worked in retail for 15 years and need to leave asap. The rudeness and impatience from customers is getting beyond the joke. Have some lovely customers though. Plus colleagues are leaving (mainly sacked) and not being replaced. Last 3 Sundays I worked, there was just 6 colleagues on checkouts when we need another 3-4 more. The stress has made me ill - having to take 3 weeks off in the summer for stress and had two colonoscopies in two months for removal of polyps. Stress causes polyps.

Now I have no idea what to apply for job wise. My previous experiences have been customer service, face 2 face at a bank - hated that especially the unrealistic targets, call centres and admin. Don't want to go back to call centre as when I worked there, there was nobody of my age (early 40s) working there.

Then some potential employers want two references. The employers between my current job and the bank no longer exist. In the past, I did use someone as a personal reference but they are no longer with us. Could a current colleague, who I have worked with for 14 years do?

Then if I do get an interview/assessment during my shifts, how do I explain that I need that day off or can work between X-Y without looking obvious that I am attending an interview? When I have applied for jobs in the past, they have been on my days off, annual leave or when I was unemployed.

Yes, your current or former colleagues would be a good reference. You don't need to explain why you need a day off. Just tell them that you do. If they insist or you want to be polite, just say personal reasons or come up with an innocent reason like fixing stuff at the house or traveling.

Or if you know they'll deny your holiday request for whatever reason then don't mention it and just call in sick.

Not the best way to go about it but sometimes you've got to do what you've got to do.
