hi, im currently intending to move my current HTPC hard drives to a new mobo/cpu. from a phenom 9500 / abit AX78 to an MSI C847MS-E33 Intel NM70 (for lower power consumption.) i was hoping to be able to just pull the OS drive from one to the other without having to wipe and reinstall everything and the endless setting everything up back just the way i like it.

is it a good idea or is it going to fail miserably? its currently running windows 8 btw.

What I'd do...

Take a full backup of C:\ using Macrium Reflect

Install it and create a bootable disc, use this to create the image.

Now swap the motherboard and see if it works ok. If it doesn't, then use a spare hard drive to install on your new kit. Once it's up and running, migrate the data drives over.

would i not have problems restoring the image then? the current os drive is only a little 64gb SSD and i dont have anything else that small to write the image to. or am i thinking of drive cloning. been good few years sinec ive had to bother.
