Want to OC my new system D;

Hey guys, I just bought an i7 3770k and Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77. I've been reading up about how to OC but honestly I'm scared I'm going to destroy something stupidly. I was hoping if I give some info I could get a recommended OC for my system?

The OC on the CPU I feel I can grasp. But I'm not sure what I need to change in regards to my memory. I have (dual channel) 4gb kingston hyper x blu ddr3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz. In CPU - Z it says the following about my memory.

DRAM frequency 672.6 MHz
FSB:DRAM 1:5
(CL) 9.0 clocks
(tRCD) 9 clocks
(tRP) 9 clocks
(tRAS) 24 clocks
(CR) 1T

From what I've been reading I need to understand how to adjust certain settings with memory to get a good OC.

For whatever reason I am running fairly cool temps, (Core0 36c, Core127c) Nothing in my system is going over 40 currently but that is only with chrome and a few little bits open. Any help on how to OC this setup well would be so greatly appreciated. I am pretty much a retard with OCing, its completely new to me.

Let me know if any other info would be needed.

thank you!

what cooler are you using? personally i wouldnt overclock if using the stock intel cooler

you have to x2 the memory speed in cpu-z 672 x 2 = 1344mhz

you can enable x.m.p to get the rated speeds or select 1600mhz in spd system memory multiplier

Just stock for now sadly. But I have read that it's quite possible to get 4.2ghz on stock. Is it really not worth doing without a cooler? I'm only after a slight bump anyways. :$

i suppose you can try,id just set the cpu multiplier to 42x,set cpu voltage response to fast and leave the other settings on auto and see what temps are like

Leave all the BIOS voltage settings on 'auto', the bclk setting on 100, and change the multiplier (sometimes labelled 'by all cores') to 42.
This should give you 4.2GHz no problem. From my experience (2500K) I only needed to start tweaking voltages manually to get over 4.6GHz, 4.2 is quite happy at auto settings. And don't worry- motherboards are very good at protecting themselves- if you overdo things, it just won't boot or it will automatically reset itself to stock settings if something isn't right- it's very hard to bork your system by overclocking!

I will say, though... Upgrade the CPU cooler. Plenty of threads on here to guide you the right way.The stock cooler does struggle if you start to ramp things up!

K so I set the multiplier to 43, BCLK is at 100 and my ram frequency up to 1600mhz. Temps are still pretty good. Core 0 on 34c and Core 1 on 30c. Need to stress test it but ill run it like this for a while and wait and see. Anything else I can do to it? And thanks very much for the help.

yeah stress it in prime95 blend test for 20-30 minutes, stop the test if temps go above 80c

those temps are just idle temps, you need to stress the cpu

Been running prime about 10 minutes now. Core temps both staying around 71 - 75. Temp 3 is the only other high temp at 60 - 68. Is this alright? I might put the multiplier down to 42 just to be on the safe side.

Those are fine, but as wazza has said. Keep below 80c. 42x will be plenty in the time being tbh, then when you get a better cooler you can push a bit higher.

I have the same board as you as a replacement for a P8P67 I damaged. I am using my i5-2500k @ 4.6 that I bought a couple of years ago.

All I did with mine is set the multiplier to 46 and manually set the core voltage to 1.35v (a setting which I discovered for stability)

Also disabled EIST etc C1 etc etc

Ran Prime95 last night overnight in Blend mode and the max temp recorded was 70C and was rock solid stable.
