Right, so I'm in a household whereby they want to ditch ntl (or VM, or whatever they've rebranded themselves as these days). Currently, they get tv, a second phone line and broadband down the cable.

However, they want to go freeview for the tv (already got the box) and are therefore looking at alternative broadband and phone options. They're not heavy internet users, so something like a £12 pm 4GB thing would be fine.

What would people recommend as a reasonably reliable ISP and does anyone have any suggestions about the cheapest way to get a second phone service (VOIP or something?)

Thanks :)

I'm happy with cable. The first year on 2 Mb connection was 10 pounds per month on promotion. I think they upgraded it to 4Mb and in the new year the cost goes to 18 pounds per month.

I get digital TV via Freeview.

I get my telephone service via Sipgate on VOIP, which has no monthly cost and calls are cheap. They also have a great admin website. You'll get a landline number with an area code of your choice.

If you don't currently have a BT line, or a disconnected one, you'll need to pay BT a fee to reconnect along with the monthly charge. So you'll be paying that as well as the 12 pounds per month broadband fee vs £18 for broadband with Virgin Media.

Be would do 8mb broadband on the main phone line for £14 per month if your in their area, if you get a voip/skype phone that plugs into a router as well then that would give you a second phone number.

If you really want a new second landline that is going to cost at least £116 install plus say £8 to £10 pm rental from BT.

Have a look at talk talk, they could do broadband and phone for about 16pm inc line rental just sort out your own router and router compatble skypr/voip phone.

If you've been away from BT for over 6 (?) months they will likely want over £100 to 'install' a line even if an old BT line is already in the property. The reason for this is the pairs will have been disc'd in the cab outside and the tech will have to spend all of 90 sec's redoing them. You may find it's cheaper to stay put :( Other option is O2, Sky and Orange were doing cheap ADSL deals if that'll do you but the service on Orange can be shocking. Out of the lot i'd say the £24 sky offer may be your best bet but that BT install fee could make it expensive in your case.

You could always give VM a call and take one of the new customer deals assuming your initial 12 months are already up...
