Want to swap BT Smart Hub 2 for my own TP Link router - what am I missing?

I've just moved into a new build and finally BT have got their act together and got my fibre to the premises working today!

The thing is I was hoping to be able to swap out the Smart Hub 2 and continue to use my old TP Link Archer VR2800 - not least because it's already set up with all my devices (and server) and I am already familiar with the UI etc!

I've gone into the TP Link's settings and changed it from being a modem to being a router only - plugged the ethernet cable into the WAN port and expected it to "just work"!?!? (probably naive I know!)

Does anyone know what other settings I need to tinker with to (hopefully) get it working?

I'd assume that there's a PPPoE connection you need to configure (semi-educated guess).

Yes there is a PPPoE option but with it being fibre to the premises I don't have a username and password as such and it won't seem to let me leave them blank!?!?
