Hi All.

Im really interested in upgrading to a new system in the next few months and have my eyes on a 7800x3d/4080 super system with a thousand + watt plat rated PSU (come back to this in a bit).

what im really hung up on is whilst the current system i have is plenty powerful and im aiming for a 4k gaming experince (currently got 3080 1440p going on which is fine but id use this pc as a tinkering platform that i wouldnt mind accidently breaking) im aware that new CPU's and GPU's are on the horizon and from the rumours they sound very powerful but very power hungry.

Now i know rumours are just rumours and hearing things like the 5080 will be a bit stronger then a 4090 and that the new cpu's on the horizon will be powerhouses too, the recent intel cpu issues with drawing lots of power and causing issues and the times when 4090's were melting power connectors is really making me want to go down the path of stick with the tried and true rather then get 5080 and new intel cpu, have them be fine for a few weeks or whatnot only then for issues to emerge that fall outside of the usual RMA wheelhouse and ive been fortunate enough in the last 15 so years to only ever have one gpu die on me (gtx 280 :P).

So i can see myself with 2 choices:

1) order new pc now with with all the storage,RAM and power surplus id need to upgrade to the a new GPU in like 2026 (and maybe new CPU if the mobo socket is still compatabile with these new cpus?)
or
2) wait and jump in with these new cpus and GPU's fingers crossed no hardware defects occur over the next few months.

what would you do?

I would wait because a 3080 is a really good card to be "stuck with" and you should only get more performance.

I don't think it is likely that the 12VHPWR issues will happen again, we have a revised connector and the newer ATX 3.1 PSUs are being released. I don't know if AMD will switch or continue to use the more reliable 8-pin.

The Intel CPUs: I'd be very surprised if Intel make the same mistake twice and the new CPUs (due in October) are quite different to the old ones.

The AMD CPUs: they should be compatible with AM5, but the only upcoming CPU is the X3D, since the 9000 series have only just launched.

yeah the 3080 is still really good and with upscaling tech getting better and better that'll prolong its lifespan even more. these recent stories really rattled my confidence in these companies too.
