Hi trusted OCUK peoples!

I have been bitten by the upgrade bug but am a) so out of touch am not sure if I'm on the right path and b) am not sure whether it would be worth it so am looking to you for help!

Upgraded in Feb 2010 to -

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66GHz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
Geil Black Dragon 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Triple Channel (GB36GB1600C8TC)
Corsair TX 850W ATX SLI Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-850TXUK)
and an ATI 5850HD (can't find the exact specs).

Have now started looking at the Socket 2011 stuff as I tend to try and future-proof as much as possible but am wondering how much gain will I really get with this and is it worthwhile upgrading to something else.

Budget isn't too much of an issue - around £800-£1000 I reckon.

Apologies for the vagueness of it all but hoping I can get a bit of help :)

Thank you all :)

Is that 920 running at stock? With a decent cooler most will hit 3.8-4Ghz easy enough.

Apart from overclocking the cpu all i would do is upgrade the graphics card and add a ssd.

tbh, just upgrade your graphics card if you game much. Do you have your i7 overclocked? the D0's can get over 4Ghz without many issues.

do you have an SSD as your main drive? if not get one!

(edit: lol what pastymuncher said.. beat me to it)

I do have an SSD, 80GB Intel one, thinking of a 2nd to use for my main games.

It's marginally overclocked, I think to about 3.2GHz - I've tried pushing it further but could never get it above 3.2 stable (although I like to think I'm tech savvy, I'm a wuss when it came to voltages as worried I'd fry it!)

What sort of GFX card would be recommended ? Region of £100-£150 ?

I knew I kept forgetting things - Zalman CNPS10X Extreme CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/775/1155/1156/1366)

Also thinking of having 2 gfx cards (unless one "bigger" one is better).

Sorry for all the missing information :(

With regards to GFX of the latest generation in your price range.

Nvidia:
GTX 660 ~ £180-£200
GTX 650 ~ £90-£100

ATI:
HD 7850 ~ £150-£175
HD 7770 ~ £100-£120

660 and 650 have only just come out if you want Nvidia.

Review: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/geforce-gtx-660-geforce-gtx-650-benchmark,review-32523.html

The GTX 650 is slower than your 5850 while the 7700 is a slight bit quicker but also less than 5850 speed. The GTX660 is faster than the 7850 (although I haven't seen a OC vs OC comparison - GTX660 is already clocked fairly high and the 192-bit bus hurts it so the 7850 gains more from overclocking).

All those 28nm cards so a fair bit less power of course and depending on the AIB model, should be quieter.

Oh, didn't realise they weren't much faster - even though its nearly 3 years old I guess unless it's big bucks I'm putting down I'm not going to gain too much.

think ur in the same boat as a lot ppl yep ><
unless you like AA with all the extras or super high fps i dont think you will be that impressed

The GTX 680 is over twice as fast as my 5870 but I'm not feeling the need to upgrade just yet, no way I am paying over £300 for a graphics card, not again.
