hi I am looking at upgrading my processor but have no idea really of a good processor thats compatible with my pc and is fairly cheap. I know that the current processor is a AMD athlon 64 processor 3800+ 2.40ghz and the socket is AM2. I have a decent ammount of ram installed and a decent graphics card so really the processor is all that needs doing. If anyone is willing to help me out would be much appreciated thanks.

Thought about overclocking your current cpu, not sure if an cpu upgrade would be worth it, unless your board can take the Phenom.

Can you supply the make models of your system, it might help others on the forum.

Ok I don't really know anything about overclocking what do i need to do and is it easy? Also what type of things do u need to know? Im on Vista and I think this is my motherboard as i used it when i upgraded the ram. I have 2.5gb ram and nvidia 7600gt graphics card aswell but apart from that i don't really know what else you need to know lol. If there is anything else i will see if i can find out if it helps?

Thanks for the link, I was unsure if your pc was self built or pre-built.
As your is pre-built by HP I suspect overclocking will be out of the question.

The cpu upgrade would be one of these, assusming your board can take this.

Can I ask why you want to upgrade.

Or if you want to upgrade cheaply, the 4200+ X2 OEM is going very cheaply atm on OCUK, otherwise RJC's one is the fastest dual core AMD do, otherwise its quad core phenoms.

ok just out of interest would any processor with am2 next to it work or is it like ram where it was pretty specific as to what u needed? Also i take it will get hot etc if i went fo say a quad core? do i need to get anything else such as fans or that and how do set them up or know if current one or other ones are good enough? Also how easy is it to install these things? Im totally useless when it comes to pcs and hardware.

It will depend on if the current BIOS has the code for quad / tri cpu's.
You might need to ensure you have an inlet and outlet fan on your case to ensure enough fresh air is getting in.
