Pretty self-explanatory title.

I'm looking for a program that will 'listen' to MP3s given to me on an unmarked mix CD and would then contact an online database and fetch/enter ID3 tag information based on the content of the audio (various artists/albums etc)....

Any ideas? Does such a thing exist?

Failing the request... Shazam them.

Thanks for the suggestion. I know what the songs are (they were written in the tracklisting with the mix CD!), I'm just too lazy to sit and type them all in :-) plus it'd be nice to have extra info like their year of release and the album they appeared on etc..... There must be an app that's like 'Shazam for Mac'??

(p.s. I've tried MusicBrainz Picard which does a semi-decent job but doesn't seem to find everything.....)

MusicBrainz Picard - unparalleled.

I posted this message after trying Picard, simply because I found that, although it worked well on individual MP3s, when I tried to analyse the CD itself it wouldn't recognise the CD and asked me to type the name of the artist or album - the whole point being that there wasn't a single album artist, it was a mix CD... Obviously I could just import the files first but then it tended to replace the track numbers from the mix CD with the track numbers as songs appeared on their original albums etc etc..... which lead me to wonder whether there wasn't a better program for the entire process of ripping/analysing/tagging mix CDs... I can't be the only one who still enjoys a great mix, lovingly crafted by a good friend?!!

Have you tried importing the CD in iTunes? I have found that does a good job at detecting and tagging.

I have tried importing in iTunes, but as a mix CD I think that analysing the files and working out what songs they are based on their audio waveforms etc goes a little beyond the abilities of iTunes....??

It depends how the tracks are set out. If I recall, when importing a CD iTunes doesn't analyse the tracks, but looks at the CD title and other meta data (track counts, length)

Yeah but it's not going to look at 15 tracks, none of which have ever been on the same album together, and go 'yep okay I know what each of these songs is'.

Just to be clear in case there's any confusion - I'm talking about a mix CD - different tracks by different artists - that's been burned by a friend, rather than a 'compilation CD' like 'Fresh Dubstep Floor Fillers 7' or whatever the kids are thrashing about to these days....

The simplest solution would be to get your mate to burn a CD properly. Not sure how he has burnt a cd without putting any track info on to it...

Whilst that is true, that's not how how CDDB works.

Your CD is xx:xx mins long, contains 15 tracks, the first track is xx:xx long, the second is xx:xx mins long etc etc.

This creates a reasonable unique fingerprint of the CD and then the Album info, including the track listing can be pulled from the DB. If there are near matches you can usually spot which is yours. But that does depend on whether it's in the DB in the first place as not everything is and newer stuff can take a little while to get added to the various CDDB databases.

If its not a commercial CD, then something like Shazam is your only hope...... or you could ask whoever made the CD :P

Yeah, don't I know it! :) Trouble is, it's an elderly gentleman in the building where I work - we like to pass CDs of our favourite tunes back and forth - I can't believe he actually knows how to burn a CD, all credit to him!

As well as Picard there's MPFreaker, Tagalicious, etc.
But if Picard doesn't find everything these probably won't do any better. Just fill in what's missing yourself...

You could try TuneUp - it basically scans your tracks and gives them the correct artwork, genre, album name, artist name and song name. Although it comes at a cost, £25 a year. There is a trial version available though which lets you try it on something like 25 tracks.

Bought and used this myself to properly tag and find artwork for my entire music collection. Works superbly although I've seen others moaning about it so YMMV.
