WANTED: E39 535i

You'll struggle to find many now, let alone a decent one.

Be as well trying to look for a 540 if you really want the v8 but really don't want an M, neither are massively quicker than the 530i (though they sound glorious)

Yea, the 535 was always pointless. No quicker yet not as nice to drive as the 540 but with identical running costs to the 540.

The 540 is noticeably quicker than a 530, the 535 not so in my experience, the V8 feels heavier and isn't as sharp on the steering but, that said, it's still perfectly acceptable IMO.

If you want a V8 forget the 535, if you want 535 performance but with sharper steering (due to a different steering setup) then go for a 530i and enjoy better economy to boot.

It's not really tbh, well not until you're up to "motorway" speed.

Hence me saying its noticeably quicker!

We have to agree to disagree here I think, it's got a ~55hp advantage over the 530 and you certainly can feel it, ok not whilst pottering around town perhaps (but who floors a car in such a scenario anyway?) but it's most certainly there to feel.

It (the 540) has more power and more torque and a better power to weight ratio.

I suppose the manual versions might be a bit more noticeable - might also be down to the car itself hiding the sensation of the extra power

Doesn't really matter anyway

It also weighs quite a bit more which reduces the effect of some of that 55bhp.

True, it feels much heavier IMO of the two to drive and in the handling dept it's more of a bus!

It's certainly much more lively despite the relatively small power difference.

True enough, none of them (bar the M5) feel particularly quick until you look at the speedo!
