Well I'll be 18 in 9 days and I wanted to ask my parents to buy me a ps3, however after reading some of the threads I'm not sure.

I keep reading the ps3 is performing worse than the 360, I'm quite anal about the FPS, 30 doesn't feel smooth enough for most games. Also the graphics are a worry, I'll be sitting in front of a 24'' full HD monitor with it, and the ps3 being 720p for most games, means I'll have to run non native res which makes me fear having blurs...

Also I keep reading people barely use it, only for films really, that would be entirely pointless for me as I download films ( before you have a rant, it's legal here), I never buy blu ray films and prolly never will. I want a ps3 purely for the console exclusive games... Is there any point for me getting a ps3? I want to give games like GT prologue, Killzone 2, MGS4, Soul Calibur 4 and Motorstorm, CoD3, Resistance Fall of Man a go...

Even my mates say it's pointless to buy a ps3 for me since I have a pc which runs all games fine and will keep my pc updated at all times anyways.

Reasons I think higher of the ps3 over the 360:
360 has zero console exclusives that interest me ( halo3 and gow2 just don't interest me really, PGR looks like nothing special).
Free online.
Built in Wifi ( cba laying another cable to my room tbh)
Hate the controller, it's too big for my hands. PS2 shaped controllers feel great in my hand.

So what do you guys reckon, should I buy a console or not ? I mainly like Strategy ( both turn based and Real time), FPS and Racing games... Should I ask for a wii or 360 instead, and why ?

Go for PS3 tbh...
Does all you want, IMO PS3 is what you need :)
Graphics are fine, don't worry about that.
All those games you mentioned that are exclusive for the PS3 are brilliant :)

Xbox 360 will do the job but not as good as the PS3.
PS3 has all that media stuff, nice interface.
I mean like, the PS3 doesen't just have to be used as a games console, can be a media centre, Movies etc.

But with the Xbox tbh it doesen't really look like one, looks like a standard game console that goes next to your tv.

PS3 +1

pc would probably be best for you judging by your fav genres lol :p

although deciding whether to get ps3/360/wii is a no brainer since you show no interest in anything other than ps3 exclusives.

30fps is not a problem in console shooters since the pace and sensitivity settings are so much lower that you don't notice it. 720p upscaled to 1080p is also no big deal

I won't be using it for that at all probably though, because the ps3 does not the formats of most of my media ( xvid/divx/h264/flac/wmaloseless/dvdr and cdr).

I'm just worried that I won't be using it at all for gaming, like many people say.

I think it does support most of those formats?
I'm sure you can use it for gaming... There are plenty of games!!
FPS - Battlefield, Call of Duty, etc.

the people who don't use it much for games are the ones that bought it for its media capabilities... if you bought it for the games then of course you are going to use it :p

It plays most xvid, almost all divx, most h264 and all DVD's and CD's. What it can't play directly can be made to play with a little tweaking (mkv2vob and tsMuxeR are your friend) or via streaming from your PC.

As for games, there are tons of great games out there. Do what I do and get a free Lovefilm trial - or three - and just rent random games :)

is it this time of the day already?!

Quick, someone bring in the fanboys to debate what console is better..... Again.

You answered your own question by stating these points:

"Reasons I think higher of the ps3 over the 360:

Not that the points are all true, as it's widely acknowledged the 360 pad is much better than the ps3 pad, a year sub for live is £25, or £2 a month, and there are wifi options to get the 360 hooked up. But you've made up your mind already!

Enjoy your PS3 :) Happy gaming.

If you want the PS3 exclusive games get a PS3. Easy.

Everything else is buyer anxiety. Get one, enjoy it.

On the front of not enough games, the PS3 has a tonne of games that haven't and will never be released on the PC due to Sony own studios developing them. Among these is Wipeout HD, Motorstorm:PR, Warhawk, Resistance 2, Killzone 2 and Gran Turismo. On top of that there are plenty of studios that work exclusively with Sony and some exclusives like Valkyria Chronicles that are very unlikely to be seen on any other platform. It has some utterly sublime games you will never see released on your PC.

The whole performing worse than the 360 issue is all but dead and buried now. It was a big problem this time last year, but now differences are negligible/non existent on the whole.

I barely use my PC these days, the PS3 has stolen my gaming time.

Answered your own question in one sentence :P

Its down to personal preference tbh.

I bought a PS3 a few months back, and I have to say it was the worse purchase I had ever made.

Albeit for a week or so, it was good, I managed to play Uncharted (Excellent game), MGS4, Motorstorm, Resistance etc, but after these 'Exclusives' I just got bored with it.

After which, my PS3 sat their and gathered a large amount of dust. I like you, would never use the PS3 for blu-ray, I find it pointless (for me), so for me it was a pure gaming console.

After 2 weeks of owning the PS3, it was listed on the internet and sold. Its something I will never buy again. But I am not knocking the PS3, it just wasnt for me, and I know a chunk of people who have felt the same, but on the other side of the coin, a chunk of people who love it.

A PS3 is a tough call, its like marmite, you either love it, or you hate it..

But it sounds like you have made your mind up, as it sounds like the 360 avenue is not an avenue you would like to explore.

To be fair mull3t, you get your games for free on the 360, so obviously the PS3 is going to seem bad in comparison.

One has free games, the other has £20/40 games.

Xbox is 720p for most games, then its upscalled just like on the ps3 iirc.

PS3 has really grown on me after playing a fair amount on a mates, if I was buying Im not sure which I'd go for now.. if they were same price or a free present I'd get a ps3 in a shot, unless all your mates have a 360 that is..

Not all free. I actually own 2 360's, one with my originals for live (FIFA 08,09, GOW 1&2, COD3/4/5, Rock Band etc) and the other for my backups. (offline).

Also, I own a PSP, PS2, PS1, DS, N64, Dreamcast, SNES, NES & Mega Drive, all of which I buy my games, wether they are £1 in the bargain bucket or £30 for new releases.

i have a good pC, quad, 8800gt etc but i still prefer to play some games on my ps3. things like ResE5,, or MGS4 they do truly look great on a HD TV, regardless of a few jaggies here and there. i bought my ps3 nearly 2 years ago, it hasnt been used so much as it has in the past few weeks!!

Snow, if the 360 controller really is uncomfortable for you then definitely go for the ps3. I have the opposite problem, I really want to buy a ps3 but the controller is so useless in my opinion that I know I'll just end up regretting it. Also, if you're planning on using wireless from the off, it's probably more suited to you.

I'd suggest just sticking with pc but as you said, you'll be keeping your pc updated regardless so you might as well buy console.
