I've been after a netbook(sorry, UMPC) ever since the original EEEPC first surfaced, but never got round to it. Just happen to have seen a Toshiba NB100 for a decent price - £180 with linux, 8.9" truebright screen, 512mb ram, 80gb hd. If i'm not put off it, i'm going to buy it tomorrow.

I want a small one - i would have bought the 7" EEE if it hadn't had the big borders around the screen, and i've got a nice Samsung R20 12" lappy, so a 10.1" netbook wouldnt be a deal smaller than what i already have.

Not bothered too much about horsepower, it's only going to be for playing old retro games on the move, divxs, mp3s etc -it might at times have to run three web browsers.. found the touchpad to need too definite a press and be a bit too sensitive to movement once pressed for me, but i can adjust (or adjust to) that.. keyboard'll take some getting used to but i can type on it a little slower than normal if i keep one eye on the kb.

amount of ram irrelevant, no netbook i've seen at sensible money comes with 2gb ram and that's what i want so i'm going to be upgrading that anyway (xp to come) and the HD is kind of irrelevant too - got about 6tb in the house already, 80gb on the move is enough for me, and i'm toying with the idea of sticking a reasonably large SSD in it at some point anyway, will if i bust the original HD.

AFAIK toshiba used to make damn good laptops.. not sure on this one, the reviews i've read of it say its much of a muchness with others in class, other reviews criticise it for being nothing special..

anyone here got or used one? are they any good? ta folks

looking at this market myself and considering a purchase. I'm afraid I can't offer helpful advise but will point out one thing on the ram issue:
double check to ensure the 512mb Ram isn't hardwired in as on some cheaper modes this limits you to 1.5gb!

I bought one of those ones sold at the purple shirt place in Feb. (Advent one) Hardly ever used it too! I was itching to buy a netbook. I even upgraded it with more ram and a bigger HD!

Now, it seems like a waste of money as i have only probably turned it on approx a dozen times since i bought it!

They are sexy units. Nice and handy if you are out and about etc but otherwise i don't see the point now.

I want one because i'm on my comp most of the time when i'm at home but can't be bothered carrying a full size laptop around. I also want it for occasional get-togethers with mates, the odd holiday, etc.. but mostly home use, and even at home its tiny screen is the reason it's so useful rather than the opposite.

if i can just carry around a netbook while i'm doing stuff, i'll use it - i predict it'll probably be on 24/7 or very nearly...

just need to know if this one is any good.. it MUST have smooth playback in divx/xvids above all else

get the TOSHIBA NB205. It's a better deal. Has built in bluetooth.

And Toshiba still makes very good products that dominate their competition. They are just not as big of a name brand as Samsung or Sony. But the Toshiba allows for 2gb of 800mhz ddr2 ram and easily can upgrade the hdd to an sdd all without voiding your warranty. On US sites, it gets great reviews and I'm buying one in a couple of weeks and will leave a review also.

It's the NB200 over here, I do agree that it's a good improvement over the NB100. It's a bit larger though so you might not find it to be much smaller than your Samsung, Skree. It does have a built in HDD recovery system which is convenient and the keyboard is a nice size.

Minus the audio and gfx, these netbooks can do quite a bit more than people would lead you to believe. Especially when it's not that hard to make a bootable usb. But I find the netbooks to be perfect for computing on the go if you already have a nice home rig.

I went to the local PC store around here and played with all of them quite extensively as they were not locked down. Was able to download trial version of office on them to see how they ran it and test the keyboards. This store had the popular samsung, hp, acer, and toshiba models. By far the best track pad was the Toshiba. Really responsive. It only cut out on my for a half a second once, which Toshiba already has a bios update to fix that. The Toshiba's keyboard dominated despite the actual keys looking smaller. I have never had a netbook, and the toshiba's keyboard felt just like my one at home. All the others were so much smaller feeling, it was very obvious to my hands. The Toshiba also was very responsive with MS word. Loaded it faster than the p4 machines at my old job did. I would not say it is much more powerful than any other netbook, but would certainly tie for first at least.

Hope this helps someone.

NB200 Owner Here and really like it... great keyboard & trackpad for a netbook and its 9 hour battery takes some beating.

The NB100 is nothing special tbh and although £180 does not sound bad the NB200 is just so much better its unreal. The keyboard on the NB100 is not that great either really IMO...

Get the NB200 and you will not regret it!

Well tomorrow is the rumored day of student funds releasing at my school. Hopefully it is and then I will buy a toshiba nb200 (brown-I liked it a lot when I saw it irl) and will post a full review with lots of pics. I love unboxing new hardware, gives me such a rush. That's how I know I'm a nerd.
