Well all my mates have slowly been going from PC to PS3 gaming now, and it is getting quite bored only being able to play tf2 etc with the same mate!

The last console I purchased was a ps1, so I have been out of the game a fair while!

Has the PS3 still got plenty of life left in it? All my mates are on the ps3 hence why I want to go over to that rather than xbox360. I don't however want to be purchasing the console, only to find the ps4 or whatever is due out?

Also the slim line PS3 got a quieter fan than the normal? I was surprised at how loud the fan acctually was!

Cheers

yeah, sony seem to be under the impression it has a ten year life span, so what, around 8 years left to go? can't speak for the noise of the PS3 myself, my friend's seems as loud as my 360 (sans DVD drive spinning) but he's had it for some time so it'll have built up a bit of dust.

if there were one right around the corner we'd know, there'd be signs and rumours, just go out and grab a nice 250gb slim and i doubt you'll be looking to upgrade to the next console in at least 2 years, maybe 3 (i don't reckon much to the 10 year lifespan myself)

Both PS3 in my house are silent never been noisy same with my friends so maybe your friends have some iffy fans :P anyway it has plenty of life left in it and plenty of great games go get now!

My PS3 is silent. I have the 40GB model with a 250GB drive in. Just get it, you won't look back. I think it has another 5 years. Don't worry about PS4 coming out, that's PC thinking. Buy it, play games, that's it! :)

These consoles will be current until 2012 at least. The hardware specs for the next gen haven't even been finalised yet and from that point it will take at least 2 years for them to get to market.

The PS3 still has plenty of life in it and it will be a good couple of years before we see a replacement.

The PS2 came out in 2000 and is still being sold but I imagine it will be discontinued next year, 10 years after it first came out.

When the PS4 eventually comes out it will be sold along side the PS3 as have the PS2 and PS3 now with the PS3 being phased out in 2016/17 giving it a 10 year life span, it doesn't mean we have to wait until 2016/17 for the PS4.

Ive got a launch 60gb PS3 that is very quiet, my XBox 360 Elite is also quiet as long as I load the game onto HD

at the end of the day though what 'life' has the ps2 had for the last 2/3 years? PS2 slim was the last thing sony graced the PS2 with, the only things released for it now are 3rd party and even then very occasionally, it has, to all intents and purposes, been dead for a good 2 years

Not according to the sales it hasnt - I think anyone seeing the continued sales its been getting compared to its age (and cost of being built nowadays) would say "bring it on" as its nigh on all profit for Sony because its so cheap to assemble

edit - 3.5m in the US alone since Jan 08 according to this

and 20m units according to some financial reports globally in the same period......I dont think you can call that "for all intents and purposes dead for 2 years"

The slim is generally quieter than the older models, some times on idle they seem a bit louder but during BD playback playing games etc they seem to be quieter than the older models. As for the Length of console life i expect 5 years at least for it to be well supported.

you'll not i specifically didn't mention sales but first party support ;)

I think the PS3 will have a longer life than the 360.It seems the 360 hardware is already reaching it's limit(no flaming as this is just my opinion!).
Plus sony will support the PS3 even when the PS4 comes out.MS may do the same as they did with the original xbox when they 360 came out, which was basically to give 2 fingers to any xbox owners.

MS are likely to ditch the 360 pretty quick in order to put to bed once and for all the RROD and E74 errors. But I'm certain their next console will have 100% backward compatibility for all 360 titles to run with extra AA and upscaled to 1080p.

this will be the reason we see a new MS offering before a sony one, nothing more, barring the cell processor the 360 is better on paper.

No you said it was all intents and purposes dead - which by those sales it definitely isnt (and to be fair those sales figures would be a huge factor in the statement)

Its over a year older also - and now I would think they would go BR instead of DVD also

I wouldnt say one is much better or worse, its just traditional that Sony takes a lot longer to get to its optimum level, whereas MS are able to do this a lot quicker

I can see MS giving Natal a Christmas to get some sales in (Christmas 2010?), and maybe a newly designed 360/Natal combo before a completely new console arrives in three years - max.

Ps2's been going strong for almost 10 years now.

And there's still games being released for it.

Er no barring the GPU the PS3 is better :D But we wont go down the route.
MS has a new console its called the Natal it is their next Xbox if you listen to the PR talk coming from MS execs. Nintendo will have the first next gen console, it maybe no more than a HD wii but it will be the next one. I cannot see in this current climate MS or Sony wanting to release a new Console, especially MS with there small 1st party devs it wouldnt be as easy to convince 3rd party devs to spend even more money developing next gen games as it would 1st or 2nd party. I dont think the next gen will be a huge jump anyway, perhaps a PS3.5 or xbox480 with more memory and slightly faster CPU/GPU that they can sell nearer the price of the current gen consoles.
