Wanting to jump on AMD train for future proofing

Hi all,

I currently have a 4790k which has served me very well, but I want to jump on the Ryzen train knowing I could upgrade the CPU one more time down the line if I wanted to as well.

With that being said, I see a lot of people mentioning the 3600 and it does sound like incredible value for money.

Having said that, since I game quite a bit, is there any value in going to the X, or perhaps the 3700X? I know nothing about the Ryzens potential to OC, if it really can at all? so any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you :)

Get the 3600 non X as a stop gap then drop in a higher core count AM4 4*** cpu next year 4700x or the like and that's 8, or more, cores which will see you well. Tha'ts my plan and why I went x570 mobo. The 3600 is NO slouch for gaming now either...

I have just gone from a 4770K at 4.8 to a 3900X. I only got the 3900 as I do work that benefits from extra cores but gaming is excellent, even though the 4770K was no slouch. I'm not sure framerates are much better but it seems smoother. Very happy with the upgrade and I'm just waiting for something to inspire me on the GPU side.

Just remember that next-gen consoles will bring slightly clock speed capped variant of 3700x as base level for next-gen games...
Though by then improved Zen3 architecture should be here.

Also 2018's Assassin's Creed Odyssey is pretty much next-gen game when it comes to core utilization.

However in all next gen consoles 1 core is permanently reserved for the OS and DVR system that runs in the background- games only have access to 7 cores/14 threads

PC has lot more background bloat running.
Which should get at least that same one core counted out, if wanting to avoid hiccups.
Also "lack of workers for all simultaneous jobs" is why those claimed to be "as good for gaming as i7" HT lacking i5s just fell apart in gameplay smoothness.
