Wanting to make the jump....

Hi Guys,

Am hoping to make the jump to Linux but have no experience with anything other than Windows, what sort of things do I need to consider, such as what version of Linux is better for a newbie? Can they be configured to operate in a similar fashion to Windows? (My missus can just about log onto facebook) But with the increased functionality?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Am I able to set up a virtual machine, if so what Software should I use...
