I've just got my first 3G capable phone, and have been to my local phone company to see what kind of tariffs they have. What they've offered me is this :

Network : China Unicom 3G
Monthly charge : £9.60
Internet Data included : 300MB
Inclusive national free minutes per month : 240 (landline and mobile)
Price of call after minutes used up : 15p/min (landline and mobile)
Cost to receive calls : free

I'm not sure what the data charges will be if I exceed 300MB per month.

I don't really know much about 3G and internet usage, but to me 300MB doesn't sound very much. How many MB's do you think a typical month's data usage would be?

Do you think this is a good deal compared to UK tariffs?

My phone is a Samsung Omnia II i8000.

Compared to UK networks??..no not really most uk networks will give at least 500mb data allowance although i have 1gb with Tmobile.

But as long as you arent downloading big files then you shouldnt get close to 300mb...i hardly break 10mb a month let alone 100mb....most of my data is blackberry email and blackberry messenger but thats usually kbs rather than mbs.

Should ring them up to find out what the charges are after 300mb if it bothers you that much but im pretty sure they would probably send you a letter telling you that you have exceeded your limit and not to do it again.

I take it you don't browse the web of sync mail?

No i dont...i get my emails through my blackberry...i dont log into any webmail sites ie gmail for instance...its set up on my BB so comes straight through without me having to log into gmail.
