I want to upgrade my cpu to a phenom quadcore and my ram to 8gb. But i'm not sure what i should be upgrading to. I don't want to buy something and find out i purchased the wrong thing for my system. So that is where your expertise comes in :P

Please link what items i should be going for.

Thanks! :p

Yep but im not sure what one i should be getting theres a few phenoms and i dont know the difference between them.

I wanna get 8gb ram even if 4gb is enough. My mobo takes up to 8gb ram.

You will only need more than 4Gb of RAM if you do heavy 3D video work or CAD. I have never used more than 4Gb myself and I do pretty much everything on it excluding what I mentioned.

I would go for the X4 955BE. Prive/performance is great with the CPU. It's OCable up to and over 4ghz, depending on how far you want to take it.

The 840 is not even worth a look IMO.

The 840 is effectively a rebranded Phenom.

This means it has no L3 cache, something useful in rendering/gaming.

The 955 has unlocked multiplier (same as the 840) which makes overclocking stupidly easy, and has L3 cache.

The 955 is definitely the one you should be getting.

Why 8GB of ram though?

ok cheers, ill get the 955 ty. Well, just want to make my PC a proper beasty system i spose. Thanks for letting me choose! lol

There really is no need for 8GB unless you're doing some hefty rendering.

16 or higher only applies if you have several vrms :p
