Warhammer 40k MMO!

It's one of those things that COULD be great if they did it right... But it's probably going to be crap.

Interested to see though.

Makes you wonder why big names like Games Workshop take gambles on people with no real history in the product they want, ie mmo in this instance, with the exception of Warhammer Online eventually ending up at Mythic, who royally screwed the pooch on that one.

Infact i believe GW has a track record of stuff like this? did they not get a half built Warhammer MMO prior to Warhammer Online? some UK outfit based in the East of England i believe started making the game then went bust due to the top cheeses funneling off cash or something? i cant recall but i do recall seeing screenshots of a warhammer mmo that look vastly different to that crap that Mythic churned out.

If i was GW i would have gathered together known pioneers of the genre and made some form of uber studio and then farmed it out to a publisher etc and made the game inhouse, not sold the license off to some 2 bit operation that has no history in the genre, especially not as most MMO fans are extremely hard to please and will take offense at the slightest thing they perceive as wrong.

Wonder why these decisions are ultimately made? gotta be a cash thing surely?

Because GW are literally one of the most incompetent companies around. They could have made a mint off gaming but they've mucked it up throughout their history. They finally hit it big with Dawn of War....then singularly failed to take advantage of that. You only have to look at their lack of interaction with the customers (no Facebook or Twitter and their official forums were closed down) to realise they don't give a **** about their customers and will go to any lengths to make a short term profit, even if it harms their company in the long run.

Of course it's a cash thing! They're a business, they exist to make money. That's ALL they exist to do. Why take the risk of pouring your own money into a very risky mmo investment when you can just sell the license to the highest bidder and let them take all the risks?

+1

Real shame as well as it is so lore rich it could be fantastic, but they tend to churn out garbage time and again. For a big company with a big fanbase they should be approaching A list companies with proven records and working with them to produce quality gaming. They tend to fail in this though.

Just to note I'm not talking about this game, just GW themselves.

I want an Imperial Guard game!

Being a superhuman killing machine isn't nearly as interesting as being small and squishy with nothing but a lasrifle, and then being given a shove in the direction of something much nastier than you :)

I always found the Gaunt's Ghosts books much more interesting than any space marine drivel because it was just a bunch of ordinary guys trying to deal with some seriously weird and dangerous ****.

I would love this, Schaeffers Last Chancers were a big favourite of mine. Space Marines are almost as boring as the Eldar as far as this sort of thing goes.

I will agree with others though I would love a proper Total War type 40k game or Standard Warhammer for that matter.

Would be incredible if they took a planetsidesque spin on things with massive mutliplayer battles featuring all off the different races. You all ready have the weapons, the classes and the mechs. It pretty much writes itself, hell even if they just skinned planetside it would be amazing.

Thanks for the heads up. There are some interesting features in that press release:

•Get behind the controls of Space Marine Rhinos, Predators, Ork Battlewagons and other iconic vehicles of the 41st millennium;

Hopefully that implies a Battlefield element of vehicle use?

I was going to use Funcom as an example of "everybody has to start somewhere".
Before Anarchy Online Funcom had never done an MMO. Despite a terrible launch with server downtimes and lag beyond belief, the game was actually a lot of fun with plenty of depth.
I won't write anything off at this stage.

They mention both Planetside and Eve as inspirations in the interview, which is promising. As Gambisk said, just re-skin PS2 and I'd be more than happy.

Games Workshop's fan base is such that if they can get it right they'll have a real cash cow. On the other hand it also means that they only have to manage to get it out the door to make a reasonable profit no matter how good it is, because the many fans will buy it whatever.
