Out of interest as I really haven't read up too much on this but, why did it die? I still have a really lovely box with the CD's in it, great art work and all ready to use but of course, cant.

I installed it when it came out and then lost time to play it. Next minute its been canned. I didn't think it was that bad?

I remember thinking the graphics could have been a lot better...

The intro was awesome and there was so much hype..... a shame.

EA happened.

For me personally, the game died when I experienced the hyped RVR endgame of fortress sieges, city sieges etc were unachievable as their engine/servers couldn't handle the load and things just turned into AOE slideshows. I stopped shortly before Land of the Dead or whatever it was called.

A few things contributed to it's downfall.

The game was not ready to be released when it was. This was both EA and Mythic's fault for taking too long to develop the game and actually releasing it when it wasn't in a state to be released (most likely to start reaping some of the outrageous $150 million back that it cost to make). As such the game was unoptimised and didn't run great on mid-range PC's. It also had no real end-game for quite a while outside of RvR and was quite bug ridden. There were lots of hackers and gold farmers and EA didn't deal with them fast enough.

I'd say the main reason though was actually down to World of Warcraft and Blizzard releasing Wrath of the Lich King, arguably the games prime era, two months after Warhammer launched. It stole so many of the subscribers back from Warhammer. After 3 months the game lost over 70% of its subscription base and it never recovered; probably because of all the initial launch problems and even though they fixed most of it the disgruntled players never returned to find out.

It's a real shame as it showed so much potential but was ultimately ruined with a mixture of EA's impatience, Mythic overextending themselves, hackers, bots and Wrath of the Lich King.

Wasn't as good as DAoC :)

I enjoyed it, but felt very flawed/rushed (wasn't ready to be released when it did etc)

i must admit i had high hopes for the Warrior Priest and was always left really under whelmed.

I agree its such a shame - the first time I loaded it up I was so ready to get stuck in but also began to loose interest relatively quickly as it did indeed feel rushed.

I found the user interface quite a mess, didnt go anywhere near crafting and the graphics were really pants at times.

You only had to look at LOTRO to see how a really polished graphics engine should look and that game is pretty long in the tooth now.

World of Warcraft continues to work due to its cartoonish graphical design which is hugely forgiving. I cant help but think that at some point WoW will need to update its engine again and this time, in a much bigger way with better landscape textures etc. I cant see it dying any time soon really and so they should work to develop it further on that basis.

I do hope they try again with a Warhammer online game - i remember all the promo videos and they were clearly so massively enthusiastic themselves.

EA need a slap. a HARD slap. They could learn a lot from Volksvagen..

There is another Warhammer game coming out called Eternal Crusade but it's a third person shooter with a cash shop model. It just looks like Space Marine but "MMO". I doubt we'll see another Warhammer game like Warhammer Online anytime soon, which is a real shame.

It has a lot of great features:

- Tier 1 Open PvP/RvR was awesome, huge fun
- Warrior Priest was a great class
- Group Objectives were very enjoyable and rewarding too.

But past that, it got worse...

- T2/3/4 Sieges were just awful. Really bad.
- It was massively one-sided on most servers, as no one wanted to be on the losing side so people would switch faction as the balance tipped.

I loved the game, but the later tiers and end game needed totally overhauling.

Playing this at the moment:

Still very much a work in progress, but I'm amazed at how much they've managed so far.

Looks quite well with the settings bumped up via radeon pro too.

I just installed that last night. I haven't had time to play yet but just logging in to see the old character creator this morning gave me chills. Can't wait to jump on a Squig Herder later for a laugh.

From what i've been reading PQ's aren't working and there things like bugged quests here and there but they have it working up to and including T4 now.

Had a mess around last night and other than the PQ's being bugged the game seemed to work well. Granted i didn't get passed lvl 7 as i kept remembering old alts and making new characters :p

I think if it had a few thousand playing I'd be all over it but with 300~ or so I can imagine it being a bit like a ghost town.

It only has a few hundred during the day but come UK dinner time and through our peak time it seems to hover around 1300. I saw loads of people around the T1 area last night, had a few scenario matches pop quickly, chat was lively and going by the server population list T4 has 3 or 4 times the amount of players T1 does.

Nice! Very tempting to try it out again, really loved the original but it could never get going due to the problems.

It was rushed, unbalanced PvP, closed world with tiny little levels, open world PvP was limited and unbalanced, scenarios were poorly implemented loot wise and a host of other problems. It was a game I wanted to love but it was ultimately a cluster **** of a mess.
