My Sparkle 6800GT gets hot during playing any game.

Would it be easy enough to replace the heatsink with another one and would that solve the problem? Which ones would fit in a shuttle either with the case on or off...

OMFG Thats more than hot mate something is seriously wrong, dont play any games thats too hot, RMA it, if you cant if its too old reseat the cooler with AS5, seriously mate mine goes 69 tops.

It sure is! I knew that 124deg C is a bit more than warm.

Anyway it's far too old to be RMA'd (Sept 2004). I have some thermal compound lying around. What's the chances of the reseating going horribly horribly wrong?

Chances are low, I just reseaded mine and it was preety simple, screwed the pins out with my nails, got the cooler off, cleaned off the gunk off the ram and core with a tissue, same on heatsink, applied as5 on all ram and core modules, put cooler on tight-ish, well snug but not tight, works fine.

Did you buy it new? I bought one of the forum a little while ago and the seller never mentioned that he had overvolted it in the bios my temps were 115C I lowered the voltage back to stock and its now a more respectable 85C. Only check that out if the fans not working

The fan is working (well insofar that it's turning), the BIOS AGP voltage is set to auto which I assume is not overvolted...

The idle temp is 84 deg C.

Seems I'll just have to reseat it, and complete take apart the shuttle whilst I'm at it. Damn cramped things... :(

its actually in the graphics cards bios not the Mobos but if you bought it new or youve had it for a while and the fault has just started then that wont be the problem

Well I reseated the HSF and apart from accidentally splooging the thermal compound all over the chip/board/table/hands it went well.

Although is the new underload temp too low?!

It idles at 49 deg C.

It can never be too low :D (or can it I assume not unless we're taking stupidly cold levels)
Yeah the guys who seated your HSF must have done a retarded job on it because you've managed to do a great job yourself, your sorted.
