Seems that people who used RBE to mod their bios's are having their cards die. They still aren't 100% sure if it's RBE or the flasher they are using, but i'd advise people to refrain from messing with 4870 bios's for the time being.

Edited my link, didn't realise it wasn't linking to page 1, sorry for any confusion.

O.M.G I used that just the other day to custom my fan profiles on my 3870's, and when I flashed it upped the clocks to max on the gpu and memory. Both cards have been fine though, riva reports the fans working at the settings I set. Nightmare for those ppl who's cards have died. If I'd seen this post before I'd have chickened out.

What a load of rubbish !

Their problem is with the motherboard/2x hd4800 detection from cold boot
Seems it was a crossfire setup and I have experienced the same with 2x 4850 unflashed !

the op only had one card did he not?

Well cards do break. From what Ive gathered, the OP has a dead card and another person has problems with cards in crossfire. Thats hardly evidence. It doesnt make any sense whatsoever that reflashing it with the stock BIOS doesnt correct any problem.

edit: Actually there are a couple of others now.

A mate of mine's been having problems with his pair of 4850's (Not 4870's but same chip so) as well (2 days old..).

Card 1 boots into windows normally, but has the yellow ! in device manager and res is set to 800x600

Card 2 wont boot into windows at all.

Crossfire obviously doesnt work, tested his cards on my mobo and same results, so both cards appear to of generated problems within a week of purchase, and hes not "smart" enough to worry about, or care even, flashing the bios on them, so that isnt the cause.

Its probably less likely a problem with RBE and a design fault on some of the initial release cards.

:( hopefully they can contain it quickly enough. the last thing they need is to ruin the launch of the 4870 after working so hard and getting the specs and price right on target. makes me glad i didnt pick one up just yet though:/

Ok got linked here from giving someone a 4850 bios, and the link here was not at the start page on the other forum....seems there may be an issue with the 4870 possibly because of the different memory...I was not even aware the Guys had tested the program with the 4870's

Are his cards getting enough power? What does the warning message say? Is his fan definitely spinning?

I got here from somewhere else talking about 4850's, read the link here which did not start at the begining of that thread if You follow....Not My fault as I was going off half cocked defending a bios file I had sent someone..If You follow !

Deffinatly getting enough power, his 3870x2 works without fail and both our PSU's are a SLI/Crossfire 700w+ OcZ's.

Didnt note the error specificly, just the basic "Device not working properly.." if i remember, cards being returned to store in 30 mins anyway so we'l see what they say on the issue .. maybe we wont be the first in the area =)

And yes, these were 4850's and the thread posted elsewhere was speaking about 4870's, just find it strange he has 2 cards break within a week (As people with 4870's have) .. the issues could be un-related and the 4850's could just have a problem, and RBE Could be causing issues on 4870's because of the new GDDR5 who knows, ill post back what the techie says about his 4850's when tested either way.

-edit-

Back from the store, their tech guy had a look at them and one of the cards is just 100% Dead, no power reaches the card at all .. 0 volts running through the card when installed. The half-working card is also receiving much less volts then it should be, but he couldnt give a definate answer as to what was wrong with it, only that something wasnt right.
So there you go .. probably unrelated but still.
