I have a broken keyboard on my MacBook (a few keys dont work). I dont have a local Apple store, so called the premium reseller thats close. They are quoting a LEAST 2 weeks to replace the keyboard. Obviously this is ridiculous as it takes about 5mins, and i cant be without it for 2 weeks. Is there any way to sort this quicker, without having to spend £100 on the part myself?...

Interested in the response to this. My "C" Key on my 5 month old MBP is not as responsive as other keys. Working in IT etc and having seen the diagrams etc it is a 5 minute job to replace. I bought it online using the HE discount so dunno what my options are (Do I take it to a shop or does it have to be posted away or collected?).

I have other machines I can use in between, but am reluctant to let it get posted away for a period of time for a keyboard re-alignment/replacement. My machine has a 200gb HDD which I would probably want to backup if it was more than a 1hour visit to a retail store etc. Not really done any OS X backing up so as well as the time taken to back stuff up, I would need to do research etc.

I would have guessed your best bet would have been an appointment with a Genius in an Apple store but obviously that's not available.

Resellers or Repairers will be reluctant to let you post the item off as you have to sign paperwork when it goes 'under the knife' - not to mention the state it could potentially arrive to them in, which could cause complications.

Hi,

I have an Apple store near me (I know you are referring to the OP who doesn't). Do these "geniuses" fix hardware in store? I have a store not too far from me.

Update, Just spoke to Apple. They say retail apple stores can repair stuff like this (assuming they have the spare part in stock). If they don't have the part in stock you can take your machine away and come back when they do.

When the CD drive in my MacBook stopped working I made a Genius appointment and they fixed it in less than 30mins. I went for a wander around the shops and it was waiting for me when I got back.

Ring ahead to make sure they have the part first and Apple stores should fix it quickly and painlessly. I realise you said you don't have one near you but it depends how badly you don't want to be without your MacBook for a fortnight!

Maybe i will just wait until the Bristol store opens then. 2 weeks for a keyboard is just ridiculous though!

 whens that?

When the Keyboard & Trackpad broke on my MBP broke I took it to Farpoint in Bath, who ordered in the parts and let me take it back home until the parts arrived (I could continue using it with a USB keyboard) then I just took it down to them for fitting.

True it sounds ridiculous because you can replace the top case fairly easily but they have to diagnose the issue, order the part and fix it all of which have their own queues with other customers the repair is simple but you cannot do it your self as it will void the warrenty.

I would be supprised if you got it done in less than a week.
