I bought a product in Sept 2009 that came with 1 year retailer warranty and 2 years manufacturer warranty. The product broke in Feb 2011 and I got in touch with the retailer to enquire about the warranty as I was not sure at the time how long the warranty was. After finding out it was a 1 year retailer warranty I got in touch the manufacturer and described the problem, they told me it was a hardware defect and to back in touch with the retailer for an exchange as an exchange with them is not possible.
I then explained that the retailer only offers a 1 year warranty on the product and that the product comes with a 2 year manufacturer warranty, this is the reply I got;
We are indeed giving the shops we are selling the products 2 years warranty. They can pass the full amount of warranty to their customers, but if the shop for whatever reason is not willing to pass the full amount of warranty to the customer, we can’t force him to do so.

Is that right? I've tried to glue the product back together now and have superglue all over it so I probably cannot get an RMA anyway but I just wanted to know.

The manufactures warranty is usually from the date the product is manufactured - so if it was sitting on a shelf for a year then it may have run out.

But, if it's still in date then the manufacturer has to honour the warranty if you don't have any luck with the retailer (i.e.they've gone bust, relocated etc...)

But this is probably all academic as it sounds as though you've negated any warranty.

this only happens if you dont have a proof of purchase, if you can prove when you bought it, the warranty is from the date of purchase
