Ive been told that car dealers are required by law to give a 3 month warranty with the cars they sell?

Is this true? As i now need a new head gasket!

Rover :D

I dont think they have to give a warrenty but most of the time they do, if its an approved dealer it will deffo come with some. A HG will be more than covered tbh.

How long have you had the car? if its recent you should be entitled to a refund, as it's a gradual problem (usually) rather than something that just goes so you may be entitled to a refund if the car was bought very recently.

iirc, you can get a total refund as its 'not fit for purpose' within 6 months of buyign a car from a dealership.... remember reading it about some guy witha porsche a while back

i got it at the start of january, its a v reg punto.

didnt buy it from a fiat dealer just a 2nd hand car dealer

I wouldn't bother with warranties from normal 2nd hand dealers again. They're not really worth the paper they're written on... When I got my cavalier, we paid an extra few quid to get a 3 month warranty - all looked good to start with: "If anything goes wrong within the first 3 months, bring it back and we'll sort it."

Upon closer inspection though, reading through the small print, the things it excluded were amazing:

Basically, anything "consumable" wasn't covered. Consumable things listed included the brakes (and entire braking system), the clutch, power steering system... Engine consumables (gaskets were specifically mentioned as being excluded). It also specifically excluded anything broken as a result of a cambelt failure (belts are another consumable). As the list went on, it basically left nothing included that you could get a refund for.

I think just about the only circumstances we could have taken it back and got a refund were if the car literally broke apart.

I don't actually know the law WRT whether warranties are compulsory or not, but if they are, and it turns out you have one - I'll eat my hat if they'll let you claim anything for a headgasket replacement.

the legal length of time is not specified it would take into account the age , mileage and cost of the car purchased
