Was it moving or did I cheat?

My first attempt at photographing fast movers. A bit too successful if you ask me as the express doing 90mph suddenly looks stationary and a bit uninteresting! Only the heat haze over the engine cowlings gives proof that it was actually past me in a heartbeat!

Is there anything I could have done at the time or do in PP to give a feeling of speed to it? I don't want blur really but that's the only way I can think of to impart a feeling of speed and power.

Would using a slightly slower shutter speed not add a small element of motion to it? Nice shot though. :)

Slower shutter + ub3rl33t panning sk1llz yo would have done the trick for showing movement :)

Of course, obvious, panning = blurred background = sense of motion. Doh

Yer I think some panning would do the trick here.

Its going to be hard though. If you want the whole train the way you have there, you will have to get some serious distance between you and the track, and with that fence in the way I don't know if that will be possible for you.

Plus panning is a bit hit and miss at first, its ok at a track because loads and loads of cars come shooting around so you get plenty of chance to get the shutter speeds right. I hope those trains are regular!!

Personally I would aim for just a portion of the train, get the very very front, directly side on and pan with it, keeping the engine sharp and getting a nice background blur.

I'm off on the Bluebell Railway today for my cousins birthday!

SHould provide a shedload of photo-opportunities, taking everything with me. :D

I just have to say this!

Train Spotter

Not me Guv

Seriously, the railway station at Sileby where we get our chinky from is two minutes from the take-away so my son and I usually kill twenty minutes on the platform while Mr Ho works his magic wok.

Show me a 7 year old boy who doesn't love trains!

Of course, I only do it for him, not the slightest interest myself :p
