Hi all. I'm a pretty enthusiastic multiplayer gamer and been playing cs and sc2 for years now.. I spent 1600 on a pc in 2010 so thought it was time to upgrade as I wanted to play recent games mainly titanfall with high settings if possible. So after reading reviews and asking overclockers I have upgraded my old hd5870's with a new msi r9270x 4gb gpu, this goes with an intel i7 930 oc'd to 4ghz, with 6gb ram (3x2gb) .. Was wondering if this is was a good upgrade? and if it's gonna last me a few years? I played titanfall beta and seems to run it maxed out 1920 x 1080 res 8 x msaa 16 x antistropic and it stays at 60fps constant no drops at all which I was impressed with, so just mainly looking for reassurance I made the right move :) .. Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

Upgrading the GPU was a good move and you could add another in the future for another boost.

Rest if your system is still fairly good, adding a SSD for a boot drive would be nice.

Sounds like a good upgrade to me, less power used for that single card, probably less noise, most probably better performance :) Also I'd grab 2gb more RAM to make it 8 and keep that CPU - it's pretty beastly as it is.

Cheers guys, if I add another 2gb of ram will this affect my overclock ? I know that if I replaced all 3 then it would and I don't really want this to happen as I only know how to tweak not how to do it from scratch.. Would It also matter if it was a different make of ram ?

Adding another ram should not affect your overclock but I always tend to reset to be on the safe side.

Also getting another to match your current ram might be tricky, do you know make / model of your current set.

Not sure about the ram make :S .. What would the extra 2gb actually do ? I'm just worried as I don't want it to reset my overclock :( .. Haha maybe I didn't word it right ! It was just the fact my pc is like 4 years old and this is the first time I've upgraded It :) wanted to make sure I was making the right move and not wasting my money :)

You can backup BIOS settings if your BIOS has that feature but the extra 2gb is not really necessary at all... 4gb is hardly maxed out on any game... the more RAM you have the more windows uses I have 16Gb and playing bf4 uses like 5GB, when I had 8gb it used much less.

6GB is plenty and you have no need to worry

isn't the mem controller trip chan though ? so wouldn't you have to add another 6gb rather than 8 to maintain triple channel ? or is the performance increase over single not worth writing home about ?

Those 3 sticks you already have will be the same probably, so buy another 2gb stick of the exact same RAM and put it into four slots and run at dual channel - at least I think that would work

After checking the manual adding another 2gb stick, the system will continue operating in triple channel mode.

dont think you need more than 6gb for a while to be honest, most ram intensive game i played is battlefield 4 and about 5 gigs is in use while playing that. plus wont an extra 2 gigs lose the triple channel ram setup? so the only option would be to go straight to 12 gigs?

If it's not going to make a significant improvement I think I'll leave it for now :) hopefully the pc will last me for a good few years as it is :) ... Cheers for the help !! What's bf4 like ? Is it worth getting and would my spec be able to run it with decent settings ??

Yeah, high-max settings with a good card like the 270X - 6gb it seems is enough for most games right now

i can run bf4 maxed out at 1920x1200 at around 70 fps average. similar setup to you though my gfx card is better, you should manage an average of around 40 fps with a few settings toned down, shouldnt have to drop anything to medium unless your desperate for 60 fps!
