Was looking this week at upgrading what i have as i need a new mobo in any case

after reading more and more im now considering just replacing my old mobo
have a i7 920 that sat at 3.8 without any effort really

couple of reasons for the temptation of
the current offer on z97 gaming at about 90
the fact i need a new mobo

putting me off
for the number of years that have passed i dont see big increases in processor power

upgrade will cost about 350 after selling other stuff

replacement mobo will cost??? not much as i would go used..less than 100 anyway

better to stick?

I upgraded from x58, i7 920:4.2 with SLI 670 to x79 4820k:4.6GHz with SLI 670 in January it was well worth it, even though 4770k is slightly faster.

Tbf mate I'd stick with ya x58, im still on rampage ex 2 an a 960 @ 4ghz . The only upgrade ive done was a windforce 670 4gb last jan and this set up is more than adequate for most games at 1080p. Personally im waiting for x99 ive got a nice wedge to throw at it, and hopefully will last for a few years to come.

I am struggling to find used x58 boards! just had a look on the bay..not many!
and ideally i want a 2 slot space as have 2x280xs to go in!

if i didnt need a new board i wouldnt be thinking about it

ah my bad , didn't read post properly as i was feedin the lil monster at the time.
so you would be lookin at a new cpu as well then? if your MB is shot and you dont wanna play the ebay gamble game, only option is to upgrade. unless you can wait it out, and if you do ill craft you a golden star for your bravery coz i couldnt live without my pc ;)

you wont notice much diff, apart from sticking in a sata3 ssd, you'd also see slight gain with xfire and pci-e3

your cpu would run cooler IF you waited on devils canyon cpu, startups would also be much quicker than x58

if non of that's wets your appetite then id hunt for another x58 board

I managed to get the system working but it's not completely right.
But should tide me over until something decent comes out

Tbh i dont exactly know

when i went to try it today firstly my power light and HDD activity light were solid on, no beeps etc
i took the gpu out, went to one stick of ram and i got the gpu missing beeps
plugged the gpu in, 3 sticks in and it booted into setup then went to the light solid on again (as above)
so i went down to one stick of ram and gpu in and booted into bios again beofre i went to do something else with my day

so i really dont know what is wrong..originally i melted my PSU 24 pin plug slightly into the 24pin port by drawing too much current through it

The gpus are from another system, but everything else has been in there ages

i wont be overclocking it as i feel something is off and probably wont game on it either if something is unstable

I dont see the 4770k as worth it
i dont know when the 4790k will be out
haswell-E will be a different socket too
so i may wait for Haswell E

could be cold boot issue, usually its cured with more dram vtt(could be called dram qpi or cpu/vtt)

could try with 1.3v and see if its more stable
