Watching/Transfering Movies On Ipad How?

I'm struggling with the whole getting movies on ipad thing How do I get my collection of downloaded movies and TV on to the ipad to watch? So I have a mixture of MKV, AVI etc etc.

Is there an app I need to convert them to something Ipad will play? I want to keep them in HD if poss.

Any suggestions would be great
