Watching TV from iMac

A friend of mine has bought an iMac(27") and an Apple TV device, hoping to watch TV from them!
I am not an Apple person so not so sure about this, but Apple TV just streams content to a TV right? Despite the name, it will not enable you to watch TV programs via an iMac?

Yes you are right, your friend would need something like: http://www.elgato.com/elgato/na/mainmenu/products/software/EyeTV3/product1.en.html

I used an old version of this and it was great!

ATV3 is not jail broken, also she is a devoted apple fan so not sure she would like the idea of jail breaking it!

She has got TV licence for the big TV downstairs, this setup is in her bedroom, iMac is for work and other stuff.

I have set her up with TVCatchup service for now, but the brand new Apple TV is going unused(hope they will take it back if we return it)

Put Xbmc on iMac beam to appletv so don't need to be jailbreak

If you have a newish Mac use AirPlay mirroring to show your screen on the TV.
