Apologies for the out of focus picture didn't realise it was like that until the block was back on.

So This is an Ek Supremacy mx block (Ek Predator unit) and I noticed my temps spiking lately a bit so I decided to check the TIM.
I used GC Extreme when I initially installed it about three months back and yes not too much just a dot in the middle of the cpu. The paste felt hard for just being three months old.

So I cleaned down the cpu and the block with ArctiClean

But I am left with what appears to be scorch marks that look like this I have replaced the tim using Noctua NT-H1

Any ideas on what may have caused this? Should I be concerned or was it just a chemical reaction with the Gelid TIM ?

It's not a scorch mark, it's just a bit of tarnishing and is completely normal. You will get it from most, if not all thermal paste. It's nothing to worry about.

Just looks like oxidation or a mild reaction to the tim to me.

As long as there is no roughness or pitting then I wouldn't worry.

I'd be surprised if the tim is the cause of your temp spikes.
If it is then I wouldn't use that paste again.

Did you forget that ambient temperature is higher at this time of year?

It can be removed by some metal polish (autosol) or even some tomato sauce (acid) :)

Just make sure you clean off the tomato sauce before you mount it back to your mobo

Hi guys, yeah this is pretty much what I thought too. It did it to my Ek Supremacy block on my main rig but not to the corsair aio I have in my htpc, that's why I said I would get a second opinion from you guys.

Incidentally I had no stains on my last supremacy block before this but I didn't use this tim on it either.

I am aware of ambient temps being higher due to summer yes of course but a spike of 15 degrees on load is a dramatic increase no matter the ambient.
No leaks thankfully unlike my last Predator unit..

@deFiniLoGy Yea my mate said to use some vinegar on it, it's mounted now again so will leave it until I am dusting it out until the end of the month :)

I wish my block looked that clean when i take it off, you should see the state of it when your using liquid pro, ya have to grind the stuff off :)
