Alright guys,

Couple of questions for those of you running chillers.

I'm away to get a Hailea chiller (HC500) and wondering if i should increase hose size on the loop from my current 10/13mm stuff. I've been thinking that with 1/4 inch fittings on the blocks & chiller it may be pointless as they'll just end up being a choke point (as are the blocks anyway).

I'm also trying to decide on a suitable pump, unit will be out in the garage so running a 240v mains pump isn't an issue but not sure if that's overkill. Initially plan on making it dual loop but this will change back to single once a cascade unit comes on the go.

With regards to reservoir, do i just run a normal size res or does it need to be something different?

In what order are you setting up your loop with regards to placement of chiller?

Anything else that might be of use just let me know before i trial/error myself.

Used to have one, bigger tubing makes no difference. Its the same as any other WC loop, difference being sub ambient temps.

Setting it up, just route your loop normally and put the chiller just before or just after the pump. They're pretty unrestrictive so a single D5 will cope perfectly providing you're not running huge lengths of tube (i ran a single D5 with roughly 10m tubing)

If you're planning on running the loop 4c all the time make sure you (i know you will anyway) lube you board up to prevent shorting from condensation/water etc.

Nice step up in cooling till you get your cascade :)


If you're planning on running a normal rig I.E no benching from one, they're fantastic to run passive lol. Had mine switched off for 5-6 hours and the temps were still lower than ambient cooling. Obviously this depends what's in your loop as the chiller only has 790w worth of cooling potential, and whether you're running 3D clocks blah blah :D

Yeah, loop won't even be as large as yours was, chiller will be sitting right below so no issue there then.

Good tip on the lube, thought some sleeving for the hose was enough so obviously not.

Any need for a res with this? I'd be guessing no...

Yeah, it's either this or dice and i couldn't be hooped with dice, especially since i'm away a lot. This should do nicely keeping cpu or gpu cold whilst the other's getting the icy treatment.

Bench only. Std WC's fine for the rig. :)

I'd personally still have a res, just makes filling the loop easier, especially bleeding it anyway.

You'll be moving to the next league soon then on HWBot when you get the cascade going :D Means i'll be closer to #1 :D (again! :p)
 
I have a massive res on my chiller gives you a backup of pre cooled coolant for when you start benching. 35l Res.I have two loops to the res. One is looped with the chiller and runs 24/7. The second is to the components and only runs when the PC is running. This has dual D5 pumps. I am often doing 3 and 4 7970 with volts for 03 etc off this loop so a big res helps you cope easily wth all the watts of heat.

Pack - sound idea! You just using something like a loft tank and tapping it for fittings?
 
Tonester - did you just use a dollop of dielectric? Any issues cleaning it off the board or is it just a wipe off affair?

Givien up with overclocking and general hardware side of things. Sold everything, and downgraded to a SB i7 rig :)

Might get back into it next year, get Haswell-E and another chiller :)

Didn't bother matey, my bench rig was also my 24/7 rig. I routed my chiller into another room so the noise wasn't an issue ( i say routed...drill some holes and shove the tubing through :D)

When i was benching i just got a lot of kitchen towel and shoved under tubing/blocks etc so would catch anything :)

Most people use Vaseline i thought? Apply a good amount spread it on and get a hairdryer to melt into the gaps....as for getting off, i would imagine it would be a PITA!
