Water cooling query.

I have finally got all my components to start building my loop this weekend, but I've got a query about my coolant.

I got some DI water from Halfords, and I had intended on buying some PT Nuke from the place I got my HK3 from, but they didn't have any in stock, so I just went and ordered a silver kill coil instead.

Will it be OK to run my loop without having PT Nuke, will the kill coil be enough to prevent any algae growth from happening?

Thanks in advance.

I used neither for a few months but did end up with some growing. Since then I've got a piece of silver, which I'm sure will stop this reoccurring. I second the above in that either will do, I think the silver is aesthetically cleaner. No worries with concentration when doing partial water changes either

Thanks guys, I have a silver coil here, but I wasn't sure if I needed both.

I am really annoyed right now, I went into town today to get some M3 bolts for fitting my fans to my rad and then my rad to my case, and I couldn't get any..

Tried loads of places, but the smallest bolts any of them had were M4's...

I have got some really small M3 bolts, that I could use, but I am scared incase they come loose and my fans fall off the rad.. they only hold onto the rad by say 3 threads, do you guys think I should just go ahead and use them, or is there a chance that they might come loose?

I really can't believe that nowhere in town had any m3 bolts, I tried 6 different places! :(

put some threadlock on them untill you can source some longer bolts

Buying online is probably the way to go. I have a local engineering store, they sell screws, bolts, tools, stock metal etc. I buy quite a lot from them, but fear that not all towns will have one. If you're having no luck by the end of the weekend send me an email and I'll pick some up and post them to you

M3 does seem to be one too small for homebase and the likes to bother with unfortunately

That would be much appreciated if you could do that for me mate, as I really don't want to risk it with the current ones I have.

It's really annoying as I wanted to start my loop this weekend, but with no bolts for mounting my rad, I am kinda screwed.

I was going to just drill through the top of my case to bolt the rad like that, but I have decided to get the Silverstone RADSUPPORT09 bracket which will let me fit a rad without any modifications to the case at all, so I think this will be the best route for me to take.

It's only designed for a 120.2 rad, but I am sure I could use it on my 120.3..

Ive heard with watercooling and all theese ideas of coloured tubing, your actually better of buying coloured tubing and running deionised water through it as opposed to fluids like feser 1, as apparently if you do have a leak, it will show up under uv lighting (an evga rma confirmed this for me, non watercooled mobo), and i heard silver is a good anti contaminent in a watercooling loop?

Yes, coloured tubing is better than any dye. Coloured coolant is just over dyed water and will seperate after time.

People struggle to clean flux out of their radiators, so good luck trying to get dye deposits out.

Silver is a good biocide as it's effect actually increases with time.

I personally dont like all those wacky UV coloured coolants...

I'm just going to be using white XSPC 3/8"ID 5/8"OD tubing for my loop, with some red anti kink coils.

Thanks mekrel, i havent actually watercooled a pc yet. but i do find it intriguing, and very interesting. i reached pretty good results on my last 2 intel quads on air (q6600 at 3.8ghz, q9550 at 3.8ghz) im now on an i7 920 and wc seems very attractive, it seems to be a case of finding a good case that will accomadate the radiator and provide space for pump/res and the tubing etc.

Yes mate I certainly am, I was going to be starting building my loop this weekend, but I couldn't get any M3 bolts in town yesterday for bolting the fans to my rad and my rad to the roof of my case, so I have had to put it on hold until next week now.. :(

I just took some pics of all my parts that is going into the loop, I am in the process of uploading them now, I will post them up here once i am finished uploading them.

Also, once I start setting everything up I will take pics of the whole process and make a thread in here for you guys to see.

I was going to be buying a new case this month (Silverstone TJ07) but I got a bunch of unexpected bills that needed to be paid, so I had to put off buying the case for just now, I will be getting it either at the end of next month, or the month after.

So for now I am just going to set up my loop temporarily in my current Silverstone TJ10 which imo isn't really a good case for watercooling, but I should get away with it for the time being, although it wont look as nice as it would if I was building it inside the TJ07..

Here are some pics of the parts I will be using in my loop:

Heatkiller 3 CU and some Bitspower goodness :D

Aqua Computer 120.3 rad, and XSPC DDC 10w Pro Pump/Reservoir.

EK FC-GTX280 block, this needs to be cleaned out before I setup my loop, it's really grubby looking, I also have the backplate for this as well.

Here is my first ever attempt at cable sleeving, the UD5 comes with really horrible yellow coloured SATA cables, so I have decided to sleeve them with this tight weave braiding, I think I have done not to bad of a job for my first attempt!! :D

As for my fans, I am torn between using my Arctic Cooling 12025PWM's or my Xigmatek XLF-F1253's, I think I will probably use my Xigmateks tbh, as they look cooler than the Arctic Cooling ones, and they also give me slightly lower temps as well when fitted to my TRUE.

I will eventually upgrade all of my fans to Akasa Apaches though.

Some nice gear there mate, regarding the fans i also used to run the arctic 12025 pwm's, great fans but as you say theyre a bit plain looking, they were good with my q6600 to 3.6ghz, had to replace them with sharkoon 2000's when i took that cpu to 3.8ghz, braiding looks very nice, i got a mate to sleeve an enermax psu once, he said it was a nightmare doing it and he still curses me to this day:D

Thanks mate, I didn't really find the sleeving to bad tbh, although I imagine doing an entire PSU would be a PITA!

I really can't wait to start building this loop, I could be doing it right now if the local hardware shops actually stocked the bolts that I need!

I could post a link to a guy in ebay if u wanted, or if its not against the rules, he sells more or less anything screw/bolt u would wish for..

I'll await to see if its against the rules or not, im still not sure really, as Oc don't really sell screws lol.

i'll check back later.

i found several places on there that sells them, but I haven't got an account setup for the bay yet.

I will be getting bolts this week anyway, so I will just have to wait until next weekend before I can start setting up my loop.
