I spotted on the BBC News website a water calculator for your household.

Water Calculator

You have to average out a few of the calculations though - i.e. watering the garden only 3 months in a year so per week it would be less than you think.

Our household of 4 comes out to ~505 litres/day / 126 per person :o

Pah we have more than enough up here :D
As i look out my window right now its being replenished at an alarming rate

Four people in our house, 252 litres per day, so 63 litres/person/day

Pretty much the same as me although i may have underestimated slightly. (but not by much)

236 Litres for 5 people, so 47 LPPPD

Thats with a family, so washing etc is shared a lot. It would be interesting to compare the difference between houses full of students and families though.

EDIT: I just guestimated my student house consumption and get for 5 people again 851 litres! so 170LPPPD

I suppose that comes with the wastefulness of my housemates! :(

Students don't use any water other than to wash down the Alka Seltzer in the morning and flush the vomit down the toilet at night.

:p Not quite!

And using a new bowl full of water every time the want to wash a cup or plate. Oh and using the washing machine on full cycle to wash a couple of pairs of underwear. :(

It was a real eyeopener in my first week, now i realise why we have a water shortage and so much waste! :(

Not allowed to water our garden here, all our plants are dying and the grass is going bad.

Thing is, just up the road at the race course they have tonnes of water and there is a shortage in our area

According to the site, me and my stepbrother rack up 284 l/day between us - slightly under the average for a UK household. Doesn't take into account my tea-drinking activities though :p

i was just thinking that as i filled it in.

in the kitchen bit i was expecting the teapot to allow you to enter the amounts of kettle's worth of water or something.

Having lived in hot climate countries we're quite careful about water useage. Like leaving the taps running when brushing teeth, not spending more than 5 minutes in the shower - making sure taps don't leak etc... We do have a dishwasher and a washing machine but between 3 of us they get a full load maybe twice a week on average and we never do a half load. We're on a water meter anyway and we pay way under what we used to pay I believe.

Still I heard that Thames Water was leaking so much water that is enough to fill 366 Olympic-sized swimming pools. That's 915 million litres a day!! Enough for everyone to have a shower and a bath every day. Yet they are making record profits... hmmmm.

The regulations on water companies are so not strict enough... they have to be some of the worst companies ever in terms of caring about their repuatation

So I gather. Rubbish really.

Still at least I feel I'm doing my bit. I'm surprised so many people use so much water! Go and live in a hot country for a few years and learn to respect water :p

Talking about hot countries... the thing I hate the most about going to italy to visit relatives is having to go outside to use the 'facilities' now that makes me wait a while... maybe we should all have our toilets, showers etc in the garden :)
