Watercooling leaks

So I got a 780 ti recently off the bay, and it came with a full water block and the air cooler. I thought it would be rude not to have a play with water cooling. I got very close to ordering a nice D5 pump and some rads etc. then read this :

Some myths to dispel:

Water cooling is safe – many avid water coolers will tell you that they’ve never killed a part or had an accident. The same people will also tell you that you only need barbs without clamps. The truth is, that if you’re super careful and cautious you can probably avoid an accident, and certainly if you’re lucky and change parts often then you can avoid many even while not being cautious. However false confidence leads to cutting corners and when you add in a dose of bad luck it means that you will have a leak and it *may* cost you. I’ve been water cooling for years and consider myself experienced however I’ve still killed parts because of leaks. If you can’t afford the time or money that an accident will cost you then simply don’t do it!

So now I am really not sure to be honest. I love the idea of a more silent PC, and a bit more overclocking (and I have some money to burn), but I am really not happy about the potential for leaks and broken stuff. I figured it was just idiots that get leaks, but I guess my question is, can it happen to anyone?

It really depends on what system you are looking to build..

If you go with a soft tube build, you are less likely to get a leak than somebody with a full crystal link build. Every connector increases the chance of a leak.

I personally would say go for it.. Use barbs with clamps, no point in risking without. Also, try not to take the hose on and off the barb to many times. The barbs kind of cut into the hose and clamp down on it, so by removing and re-attaching several times does reduce the seal a little.
