Hey all,

Got some questions regarding WC'ing as I am presently buying the kit I want for my current [email protected] rig, and will transfer this across to an i7 rig I intend to build later.

Got the cpu waterblock (EK Supreme Nickel), have a 120.2 rad on the way atm, with the remaining bits to be decided on.

I'm a tad confused about pumps though. What are these pump tops I keep hearing about? I was planning to buy an xspc dual bay reservoir, and shoving a Liang D5 into that. However a mate told me to look into pump tops for better performance. I can't seem to find a clear explanation as to what the sods are...

IIRC - Pump tops just convert whatever format the connectors are on the pump to ones more commonly used in PC watercooling.

Not sure if you'll need them when using that reservoir though.

Aftermarket pump tops offer better/different performance (higher flow, pressure) than the stock pump top. They also allow fittings to be screwed to the top unlike the stock top that the d5 has which comes with pre-moulded 1/2 inch barbs.

Is the EK Supreme Nickel the newest HF version if so i would return it for the copper version or a diffrent block due to the plating problem ek is having on nickel block example can be found here

Your friend is correct that pump tops increase the pumps performance & try to get the d5 vario model (adjustable speed)

If you have a pump with a top you need a separate res.

You dont need one with yours.

Basically you un screw the top off the pump and put a new one on it. to make the flow better. Its not massive but the more the better.

Cheers for the answers chaps, you've cleared up everything now.

Regarding the EK.S.Nickel WB, it was a recent purchase off OCUK, so no idea of it's revision. I was aware of the plating 'issues' regarding them. I'll be taking my WB block to work tomorrow to partially immerse in some distilled water, and then speak to our company chemist (I work at an MoD based company).

Tried reading that forum, but bugger me - it seems to be occupied by 10yr olds for the most part. Got put off immediately lol

The problem parts may not even be stocked by overclockers so the chances are quite slim. If you do get a problem im sure they will swap for you.
