Not sure if this belongs in sports section?

I've never had waterproof trousers and generally managed to avoid really wet days. But having gotten caught in one last week. And probably again this weekend does anyone have..

A) recommendations on brands/technologies/materials?
B) is it better to not bother and just wear some leggings or similar?

My last pair which weren't great were heavy and gave way to water quite quickly. So you're walking with heavy wet gear. Horrible.

I'm going to try out synthetic leggings on Saturday.

Happy to spend a good chunk for a good pair but mustn't be heavy or ill overheat

Personally I find the slip on over-trousers a pain, I've got some Baleno Oslo Full Zip which are more convenient and so far been good, but you really need some decent waterproof boots or wellys or something or gaiters to go with if you are in long grass, etc.

Often I just wear light weight solar-dry walking trousers and keep a change of clothes in the car.

I carry rab over trousers in my bag, they're light and good quality. They also last longer than cheaper stuff. Also in winter I'm wearing showerproof trousers, lightweight and again rab or montane.

Lightweight trousers, I like the Montane ones so that they dry quicker or don't get too soaked. Mine don't seem to get too bad, they do have a dwr coating (https://ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk/terra-pants/). Or a poncho - covers you enough that it's not really an issue.

If I had to wear waterproof trousers (I don't and I've walked multiple days in the rain), I'd get over trousers and put them on only when I needed to. Something like these - https://ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk/unisex-minimus-nano-pants/

Yeah I don't want the ones that are basically a sheet of plastic you put over the top.

Is solar dry a term for fast drying?

Are they the plastic feeling type?

I think it is Craghopper's feature name for basically fast drying.

Yeah I don't want the ones that are basically a sheet of plastic you put over the top.

The ones I have are more Goretex style material, though I've got some older Trespass, slip on, ones which are more plastic sheet kind of thing - I don't really get on with them very well though they do keep you dry.

My use is mostly work stuff, so I tend to just suck it up for an hour and change my clothes, rather than bother with waterproof trousers, most of the time. To a chorus of **** you from my colleagues who do it more often but for some reason are less prepared.

Leggings all the way

I love my fjallraven trousers, got a couple of pairs. Once waxed they seem to do a good job. Better for the environment too as Gore-Tex stuff will probably outlast humans.

leggies come in the form of many types but mainly keep warm or keep cool... some leggings come with male parts hiders that can be worn by themselves, the one's that don't come with them, you are normally wearing something over them or a top long enough to cover up.

All my leggings are 3/4s and I have some for summer seasons and some for the winter seasons, to walk/jog/hike... to play sports stuff like play football, cycle.. I rarely wear them to the gym.
I tend to wear a layer over the top of them to not scare of the ladies.. but if you are after ones that you can wear without covering up, look for jogging leggings as those are the ones that have thought about the the male parts and are not just y-fronts with leggs.

My advice is to get both.. I have a few pairs of waterproof trousers and the ones I have are really meant to be worn over the top of something, it's like wearing shell suite bottoms..

You can then layer up which is what is really needed if you live in the north, for example... 3/4 leggings with long shorts, the leggings can be pulled up.. 3/4 leggings and waterproof trousers, you can take the trousers off and put them in a dry bag.

For thoose males who haven't experinced the joys of wearing leggings yet.. you are truely missing out.. lol.. I started wearing them since moving up north where is is cold and wet all the time and a pair of leggings with a large jumper is just heaven!!

Personally for work I use inexpensive lightweight workwear overjacket and trousers they don't take up much space and are easy to carry as very lightweight and keep you dry enough for the duration and as theres no fabric to absorb anything they dry out very fast if they get muddy pop them in the machine on a gentle wash

If you're hiking or similar you probably want to spend a fortune on goretex or whatever is suitably fashionable or fashionably expensive!

Lot of hikers wear frog toggs, very inexpensive but don't last long.

I had some water proof trousers from LIDL that were great, used them for cycling in the rain on my MTB
Wish I had bought more pairs of them tbh.

I wouldn't bother going expensive
