So, as the title suggests, my water pump suddenly gave up the ghost in spectacular form! PC was just idling in the background then suddenly what sounds like the impeller inside exploded & started eating itself Safe to say, the pc has been turned off immediately.

Question now is, do I get a new pump or switch over to air? I used to heavily be into pc modding & water-cooling but my passion now lays with cars & modding those instead. I still love my pc, but I can't justify spending big money on it if it's not gonna get shown off. I'm heavily considering air cooling the cpu, but not sure which cooler I should go for. What do people recommend? The fans I have available to use are 3x sp120's and 2x NF-A140's.

New pump, don't let it put you off, I've never heard of a pump doing that though I'd be tempted to strip the pump down and see if any foreign bodies have got in there.

I know what you mean. I was serious about water for more than 12 years until about 7 years ago. I had started playing with air a little back in about 2004 when decent air coolers started showing up and by 2010 when Silver Arrow and NH-D14 came out I switch back to air. A good pump will cost at least as much as a good air cooler with included fans, and your radiator fans will work very well as case fans.

I'm surprised I'm the first to support you in coming back to air cooling. There are a lot of 'wet-heads' becoming born again 'air heads' .. both because of cost , time involved in maintenance, added time and expense when changing components, etc. Nothing like an easily installed air cooler running cool and quiet system for £50-70 .. even with a couple good case fans well under £100. :D Most cases now have filtered intakes so all that needs to be done is clean filters every week or two. I hoover mine every week when I'm doing the house .. not that they need it that often, but that way I don't forget them. ;)

But without knowing what your system and case are it's impossible t know what to suggest.

Just out of interest I went from wcing back to air cooling. Quickly got bored and went back to wcing again :).

The stripping down is a pain and air cooling is far easier. But I don't know, it just felt too normal and boring for me and nothing quite performs as good on air vs underwater. I also missed the stripping down of cards and bending of pipes.

Only real maint costs are coolant, pipes and gpu blocks (as I change quite often). Rest will last me a good few years.

I think if you like modding on other stuff like cars, bikes as I do. You will get bored quickly with air cooling.

Indeed! Water cooling for most users is a love of building a nice custom loop .. and no other real reason. Obviously water cooling GPUs is better than air if using multiple GPUs, .. and for CPU and GPU if pushing for maximum overclocks. But the realityis the slight speed increase is so minimal it's only good for benchmark bragging rights and not noticeable in normal daily use anyway.

For someone like TheNoviceModder who has moved from modding computer to modding cars it makes sense to use air cooling in computer. ;)

Personally i went back to air. Done a few loops on several PC's and as much as i enjoy building it its a little bit like lego. Once you have built it its boring (IMO of course) its possibly the worst bang for buck in a system performance wise as it costs hundreds for just a smidge more overclock. Unless you really like playing with the loop or are really into pushing the limits of overclocking i would go back to air.
The extra couple of frames in gaming is really not worth the hassle imo, just spend the extra £300+ on a better GPU and see much better performance. However if you like a trophy PC that looks the nuts then stay water cooling. Personally i preferred a trophy wife and she does not think a trophy pc is cool.:D:p
