Are there any programs they can tell you how much power your pc is drawing?
or a calculation to determine how much extra power an overclocked cpu is drawing? I'm wondering what the difference between a heavily overclocked i920 (3.66ghz) and an Ivybridge i7 running at 4.5ghz would be. I know that the stock values are meant to be 130w vs 77w.

When i was running my i7 920 @4ghz, with sli'd gtx 470's overclocked at 750mhz core, total system draw at the wall in games was 630w. Unfortunately, i never checked what it was with the single gtx 670 in that rig. Im now on an i5 3570k at 4.2ghz, total draw at the wall in game is 330w. Card clocked at +120, +760. Of course though, being very power hungry cards, the gtx 470's in the old setup will have had the most signifigant increase in power consumption. Psu efficiency has to be taken into account as well, as whats displayed at the wall monitor wont be what the system is actually using.

Yep, better performance for a lot less power use. Same clockspeed on the two cpu's at times. But getting slightly better frame rates in games for a heck of a lot less power usage. The nv 400 series cards are notoriously power hungry. The only thing the system is down in is benchmarks such as 3dmark 2011. It took advantage of hyperthreading on the 920. The 3570k doesnt feature hyperthreading.
