On/off internet connection

Not quite sure how to describe it, when downloading files my internet seems to cut out every 4-5 seconds but comes back imediatly, but im sure this is why i cant play online fps any more. when ever i start up an online game i always have connection issues. Sometimes it looks like game lag as if my graphics card is failing, sometimes i cant connect or sometimes i just sit in the game not being able to move but can see everyone else moving fine.

This is what it looks like when im downloading, my net is a bit crap so only get 180kb/s but everything will drop to 0 then go back up again.

Any ideas as to why this might be?

Edit: Using a Netgear DG834, updated with latest firmware

i've been having something like this for a couple of days now with my wireless - Netgear DG834N and the wifi card is an intel WiFiLink 5300 - it's very annoying.

i had the very same issue, it was my firewall or antivirus, not sure which, i think it was the antivirus coz i was very shocked.

Thanks all for the replies, and sorry for my late one. I'm wired directly to the router and it is plugged into the master socket.
I'm with virgin media.
I've noticed sometimes when i do the ping test on pingtest.net i have some packet loss. but this only happens sometimes and usually its 100% loss. but i think that's just something at my end.
As for firewall/anti virus ive have had the same issue with and without it. i.e. had the problem before i installed any, and i've had windows firewall off.
I'm pretty sure its a hardware problem as i have the same issue on my Linux setup. I've tried it with some online linux native games and again on the same windows native game and i get the same in-game lag
