Have a quick question about iPlayer. My brother uses it a lot and as soon as he starts iPlayer up my ping rockets up to 500-4000ms and stays there until he turns it off. Now im wondering if there is any way for me to limit the ammount of bandwidth iPlayer will use or limit the ammount of bandwidth allocated to his machine?

This is a problem for anyone on the network and general internet usage grinds to a halt for the rest of us while he uses iPlayer. I dont want to go down the route of telling him to stop using it but maybe limiting things a bit so he can still watch it without screwing the rest of the network.

Using a bog standard homehub 2.0 with 8meg BB as i live out in the sticks

Restricting use of bandwidth != reducing ping.

In most cases, this is true. But if either the entire upload or download bandwidth is consumed from a single host then others will be effected. I've had this problem when I've been sharing my internet connection.

OP: You can download applications for windows that restrict his usage, but of course that will depend on if you can trust him not to turn it off.

Install netlimiter for him, you don't have to give him a **** poor speed, just enough so that it doesn't affect anyone else.

It will be obvious if he disables it and if its affecting everyone else then I'm sure they will have something to say about it as well.

You say you are on 8Mb broadband, out in the sticks ...so the chances of you actually getting 8Mb are ...slim, any idea what you really get ? ...you could have low enough real bandwidth that using iplayer and doing much else is going to be tricky.
