Ways of remembering things?

Depends what needs remembering, if it is a particular topic that I need a relatively in-depth knowledge of then I'll start by reading through all the relevant material and writing notes on it, then re-read my notes and condense them further, repeat until I've got down to about 2-3 sides of A4 paper and at that point I've learnt it mainly through repetition but the associations from notable phrases or words means that I can link in lots more knowledge usually.

Useless trivia, facts and figures tends to be quite easy for me to remember for some reason so I might only need to hear it once or twice and I'll know it.

On the other hand I'm pretty rubbish at remembering birthdays or anniversaries so generally require prompting, if it is particularly important then I'll have to use a calendar to remind me.

I'd reccomend Derren Brown's book (tricks of the mind) - some fantastic and very impressive memory tricks in there.

One example he uses is being able to learn the FA cup final results for the past 20 years - I know sod all about football, but after reading it and understanding it, I could give the score and teams for any year to my football fan friend, much to his confusion...
