Also tried tracert to bbc.co.uk to see whereabouts there could be a problem.

On only the second hop ping started at 119ms hrmmm thats not good!

did a tracert this morning and ping back to normal....so that smacks of congestion on the line at peak times...great :(

Thanks, done. Will test for next few days if doesnt get better i was thinking about switching isp anyway. Im on plusnet broadband right now but only get sometimes 6mb down and 0.35 upload and pings atm are 120 - 130 for £27 a month.

I'll probably switch over to talk talk medium fibre. Up to 38mb download and 2mb upload. only £17.99 for the first year and then £35 after 12 months plus £60 voucher etc.

I would have thought you'd be more likely to have contention issues with talk talk (iirc their contention is 2-4x worse). I've never had any issues with Plusnet but I guess it varies wildly between exchanges. No matter the isp I suspect fiber will do wonders for your connection.

Plusnet might not have their own equipment in your exchange so you might just be on BT's adsl system but they'd be able to tell you if that is the case.

Surfer, exact same has happened to me last night and tonight also.

Usually I am hitting 75down and 19up, last night and tonight it has dropped down to 5 and 4.

Last night it came back to normal round 12:35, was okay this morning and dropped again around 19:30.

I'm on plusnet as well, so maybe it is a network issue somewhere.

I have already reported it and logged a fault just in case it is local to me.

Hi MarkeR, i checked plusnet forums and it seems to be affecting a few people hrmm lol. My adsl is still "suffering" the slow speeds in the evenings anyway.

I'm not too bothered as i think i will be moving ISP and getting fibre (will work out cheaper for me). In the meantime i registered to this:

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/6624dabdab2890b658a237aaf7c11f28.html

but im getting 100% packet loss..could it be because of dynamic ip address? (im not sure if im on static ip)

I'll phone plusnet tomorrow see how i get on. Their online troubleshooter isnt that helpful...i dont have an extra router to test so i would have to agree to this:

I haven't tried a different router and I understand that I could be charged if there's a fault with my equipment

^^^^^^^
Dont really fancy being charged if they just send an engineer out and discover no faults (well that they can find, or at their end). Curious that they say its "my equipment" when the router is supplied by plusnet.

Won't be because of a dynamic IP addy mate.

I'm only a few miles away from you mate.

It's def one of the gateways up here that is causing the problem. Hopefully it won't last too long, somone will organise a network bod out to change one of the cards and that will probably sort it.

Different backhaul. TalkTalk, unlike Plusnet, doesn't share the same BT Wholesale backhaul.
