BT Wholesale have at last released the schedule for the first 868 exchanges to be activated for Wholesale Broadband Connect, their new 21CN broadband product. The new product will bring ADSL2+ nationwide, but may take until 2012 to reach the most remote areas of the UK.

At present we're seeing 39 exchanges enabled for WBC already, and a further 829 exchanges which have RFS (Ready For Service) dates. The dates are already being shown on our exchange pages, so just search for your exchange and look for the "21CN WBC status" field to see when your exchange will go live.

So when your exchange updated then ? have to wait until after May 2009 here. :( (If no date is in the checker for your exchange it will be after May 2009 also)

Q3 2008, but as my exchange has BE allready im not overly fussed.
Forgive me for not doing a mass read up on 21stCN but is it basicaly a way of BTW to offer ADSL2+ to other ISP's such as Entanet?

So in the long long long run there would be much more competition for people like BE?

Q1 2011 woo il be long gone by then or thats the plan anyway

I think you guys are reading the wrong date the WBC one you want to read the one your reading is when the telephone lines change not broadband. :)

Where it says 21CN WBC status: do you have date ?

21CN PSTN switchover target: Q1 2009

can't really say i'm that bothered. 8mb is more than enough for my needs. having said that, i do live fairly close my exchange so i reckon i'll be getting pretty much full whack when it does come online. :)

Ye its basically a national roll out BT upgrading every exchange to ADSL2+ ISP now can offer up to 24Mbps across all exchanges. (when they are done) This new system using nodes so it wont be using the centrals on Entanet network currently which is Adslmax service and these are situated across the UK.

This explains it

What is 21CN?

21CN (21st Century Network) is a Next Generation Network (NGN) being deployed by British Telecom over the next 5 years. The core aim of the project is to bring the UK's telecoms network in to the digital age, whilst at the same time allowing BT to save up to £1 billion per year in costs. The total cost of the project is estimated at £10 billion.

The following are some of the key changes that 21CN will bring:

* The national PSTN phone network will be moved on to a digital IP network
* The retirement of 16 existing legacy networks and the introduction of a single "multi-service" network
* The national roll-out of ADSL2+, offering services at up to 24Mbps. ADSL2+ Annex M will also be deployed, offering upstream rates of up to 2.5Mbps
* A complete overhaul of the broadband services offered. A range of new configurable QoS (Quality of Service) products will be made available. DataStream products are being removed completely

21CN involves the construction of an entirely new hierarchical network. Note that the network runs over Ethernet, rather than ATM (as in the current Colossus network). 21CN sees BT do away with the traditional switching equipment and DSLAMs that you'd find at BT exchanges. In their place MSANs (Multi Service Access Nodes) will be installed, which will terminate phone connections and DSL connections.

This is just Broadband roll out happening not the 21CN for most as this is just changing PSTN phone network explained above.
