Probably a daft question, but.......

Thinking of expanding my storage on my Xbox Series X using a WD Black C50 1TB. Can I install games directly to the C50 and run them from there, and are there any disadvantages in doing so?

Going to grab Starfield and would like to install it to a C50 given its overall download size.

Thanks for any advice.

The WD C50 is one of the official expansion cards correct? If so series x games can be installed and run from there, and the performance should be the same as the internal drive.

USB expansion drives can have games installed to them but they will only run backwards compatible games i.e non 'series' games

Incorrect for a part as some series games will run from a USB drive as long as the console type and gen in the games file info are XboxOneGen9Aware and Durango respectively (although I would recommend using solid state drive and not spinning rust for this).

ModernVintageGamer did a video regarding this 5 months ago and I can confirm as I have stellaris console edition and ori and the will of the wisps from gamepass and both run in their series enhanced versions from a USB drive (as I stated, it'd be best to use a solid state drive rather then spinning rust since stellaris did crash after a while when running from a spinning rust external drive.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up going for the Seagate Expansion Card 1TB, a bit more expensive but yes - you can install and play games directly from it.

You can do the same with the WD C50 storage expansion cards and they're a lot cheaper then the seagate storage expansion cards
