some say it is and some say its got super slow write speeds etc, so i have no idea lol as i thought black drives were made for gaming in mind so it cant be that bad!

was going to buy 2, 1 for my xbox1 console and another for my pc as my steam gaming drive or would it be better having internal black for pc gaming as im not sure on this at all :(

i would be very grateful for a little advice on this please?

thanks

Its not a great drive inside. The "Black" is branding, its not a proper black drive inside, its a 2.5" SMR drive.

SMR drives have poor sustained writes speeds which are going to be a big part of how you use it (writing large games to it).

You'd be better with their 3.5" D10 external drives or a non SMR WD Essential drive.

thanks for the time in telling me that which is great info, im totally not up on a lot of the new drives nowadays and i was just hoping to buy a 4-5tb external drive for my xbox1 and one for my pc. But are all WD essential drives non smr or is there a way to tell if its not stated in the sale etc?

are the wd black internal drives SMR as well or is it just external...

looked up the 3.5 D10 external which is more cash but seam really good

The larger capacity essentials are normally CMR so good for shucking. There's usually info available either on Reddit r/Datahorders.

I'd assume Black internal drives are CMR but the prices of internal drives vs shucking external drives means I've not really been following them.

It's pretty poor for gaming. I was using it to archive games and write speeds were slower than my fairly pathetic download speed. There's good deals on 1tb SSDs now, so you could always stick one in an external enclosure.
